Reflux, Mastisis, Protein-milk allergy
Hi all - my second son is 3 weeks old - 8.5 lbs. He has acid reflux (we have a strong family history, my first son had reflux, my husband is still on prevacid) and has been on prevacid for 9 days. His initial dose was 1 ml x 2, then moved to 1.5 ml x 2, now after seeing the pediatric GI we're at 3 ml twice a day. The pediatric GI also put us on medication for mastisis - though I have no symptoms. She said sometimes there are none and it could cause fussiness in the baby and the treatment is so benign we may as well try. In addition, she's started me on an elimination diet of no dairy and soy.

Ok - I'm exhausted. All my son does is cry and sleeps intermittently in between crying. I just bought the tucker wedge. He's swaddled, I've done the whole bit.

He doesn't seem to be improving. He is still arching his back and acting like he's in total pain after nursing.

When will it get better?! Feeling hopeless. Oh, and I have a 18 month old to take care of as well.

Re: Reflux, Mastisis, Protein-milk allergy
So you are on the compounded Prevacid? I dont have any personal experience with it, but from what I've read on here, the compound can get unstable after a couple of weeks, and basically is useless after that point (dont take my word as gospel or anything though - people here say the same thing about Prilosec compounds but there is a way to do it where it is stable an entire month and we have never had a problem. There are different ways to compound it, and some ways are better than others. So, I am not sure if this is the case with Prevacid as well). Most people on here who give Prevacid give the solutab, which is extremely easy to administer (you just put the tab in the childs mouth and by the time they can work it out it had disintegrated already). If it is the compound, and you stick to it, you may want to try asking your pharmacy if they can give you half of the prescription at a time, and get it refilled every 2 weeks rather than every month.

Do you know what strength the Prevacid is in mg?(It should say on the bottle a certain amount of mg per ml)
Again, I'm not sure how strong it is, but if its anywhere hear what Prilosec is (2mg per ml) that would make the dose really low. The lowest Ive seen kids on here is 15mg I think, even for tiny little babies.

Do you do the lifestyle type changes like elevating the crib? How long have you been doing the elimination diet? There are people here who know more about it than me, but it takes awhile to get all of that dairy and soy and stuff out of your system so it may be a few weeks before you see big changes

the only other thng I can think of is the fact that Prevacid can take a good 2-4 weeks to really kick in. So, if hes been on it for 9 days just hang tight a little longer and hopefully you will start to see some big improvements soon between the meds kicking in and the dairy and soy being gone.

On the note of the diet, on one of the forums here (I think the Allergies one, if not there, then the Breastfeeding one) has some really useful lists of "safe" foods, both prepared foods/meals and ingredients, along with where you can easily find them

Hope all of this helps. More people will hopefully chime in on this. Its usually a little slow over the weekends tho

Good luck

How long have you been dairy and soy free? It can take a few weeks to see a difference and the meds can also take a couple weeks to kick in. It is so hard waiting for it to all get sorted out, but it sounds like you are on the right track.

Re: Reflux, Mastisis, Protein-milk allergy
Thank you so much for the thoughtful replies. He's on the prevacid compound 3mf/ml suspension.

He's only been on an increased dose since yesterday and I only cut out dairy and soy beginning today. I know I just need to wait this out. I'm just so tired and he won't stop crying and its really inhibiting my ability to parent my other child.

He slept last night for the first time a 3 hour stretch in the tucker sling.

I guess I'm just looking for some words of encouragement. I'm sad for him, I'm sad for myself and my other son. This is just so tough.

I'm also paranoid this isn't reflux but plain colic. But he is arching his back and screams after eating.

Also - how much mylanta should I give him? That should help if he's totally freaking out, right?

Re: Reflux, Mastisis, Protein-milk allergy
HI there, I just have to be quick cause I am getting the kids ready for school, prevacid is usually compounded to 3mg/ml, so make sure it is compounded to this, it helps with the stability. I agree that it is a low dose though, but not super low. Give it a good 2 weeks at this dose and see if things improve, then hopefully a med increase will not take as long to see a change.

With the compound, the absolute best advice I can give is get it re made every 10-14 days.

Also mylanta I was told 4 ml a couple of times a day from birth, but even a ml or 2 helps

Thank you. He's in such discomfort. He turns red, arches his back and cranks his head back and howls.
