Ok guys Pedi called this afternoon and because there was STILL inflamation she wants us to use Carafate 3x a day along with Erins Prevacid to hopefully actually get this poor girl TOTALLY healed for the first time in her life. My question is timing. Although I really like this Dr and she is being wonderful about actually helping Erin I am still paranoid and want to run everything by you guys.
I am struggling to figure it out. She says Carafate 30 minutes before meals and Prevacid 2 hrs after Carafate. I know we don't get Prevacid equally at 12 hrs apart now because of Erins schedule but wow this seems it will really throw it off and of course it wont be before meals but after. Not sure that matters for this but my head is spinning.
Does that timing sound right?

A wheezer but at least she doesn't stop breathing anymore
I've never done both but I'm sure others will chime in.
Lora was in to see Dr Hull today too. For her 18 mth check up, but dh took her. It was the first time I didn't take one of the kids to their check up. He really wanted to do it and I really needed to be at work.

Boy you where right about staff. Just trying to get to Dr Hull was almost funny but getting irrataing but shes worth it for sure! She is sending us to new GI at Pres/StLukes Have you guys gone there. I am scared to death to see another GI even though I trust Dr. Hull her other reference was wonderful but GI's worry me. She said everyone there is great except Barrios(sp?) LOL She said if they try to send us to him to refuse.

If it were me I'd do Carafate right away when she wakes up, trying to keep it 30 mins before a meal, but if you cant, then just space it as far from the meal as you can (like if you do 20 mins instead, the world will not end), then Prevacid 2 hrs later.
Carafate again 30 mins before lunch time
And then Carafate again 30 mins before dinner time, and Prevacid right before bed.
Yea, Prevacid doesnt necessarily have to be before a meal, they just say 30 mins before a meal because then it will help with the acid for THAT MEAL if you know what I mean. If youre giving Carafate right before the meals, she will be comfy for those times anyway, if that makes sense.
... was also going to add, just make sure breakfast and lunch are spaced far enough apart so that you are leaving at least 2 hrs between the Carafate and Prevacid. You may even want to do the 2nd Carafate dose 30 mins before her afternoon snack time instead of lunch time, depending on how early you guys get up and how much time you generally have between breakfast and lunch

I didn't know this. I asked the nurse specifically if Katelyn HAD to eat after her Prevacid and she said yes because the Prevacid needs to be "activated" by the food (or something like that). Basically if you don't eat then your stomach will not be trying to produce acid and the Prevacid works on the pumps that are trying to make acid. I got the concept when she was explaining it but now I am explaining it wrong.
I have heard both ways on this and now I am so confused.

If you also take sucralfate (Carafate), avoid taking it at the same time you take Prevacid. Sucralfate can make it harder for your body to absorb Prevacid. Wait at least 30 minutes after taking this medication (Prevacid) before you take sucralfate.
We were always told to take Prevacid 30 - 60 minutes before a meal because the meal would trigger acid production and get the Prevacid to "activate".
We were seen my that GI group at PSL in Denver! PM me if you have any specific questions!
