Questions about weaning off PPI
Ryan is 11 mos old and has been on Nexiuim since he was about 8 weeks old. I would like to try to wean him off his meds. Our ped talked about trying at 12 mos, my DH will be leaving for an 18 month job in Budapest, Hungary mid Jan. (we'll join him there for a year starting in June) and I really don't want to do this all on my own.

He is on Nexium 10 mg in the AM and 20 mg in the PM. What would be the best way to start decreasing him? Should I expect some temporary increase in symptoms with each change? If so how long should that last?

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we're able to get him off succssfully. I have no idea how difficult getting a script will be like in Hungary. If it doesn't work then we'll just have to figure something out.

Re: Questions about weaning off PPI
The best way to wean off a PPI is to wean onto an H2. Then let them either out grow the H2 dose gradually (H2s are weight sensitive) as they grow or you can gradually take them down watching for symptoms. It's easier to come off an H2 than it is a PPI, and eventually you could just give an H2 as needed.

If I was going to wean I would first cut one dose of the PPI down and add an H2 in between PPI doses, eventually, once the PPI is cut to nothing the H2 would be given instead. I would do it slowly in weekly intervals.
Then eventually start cutting the second dose of PPI until it is replaced by an H2.

I'm not too familiar with nexium. Is it a compound? tablet? powder? Not sure how to cut it down, because I don't know what form it comes in

Re: Questions about weaning off PPI
This is how we did it, weaned on to an H2 and let them out grow the dose. Bea is totaly off meds this way. Theo still has issues We will be discussing it at his 4 year check up in jan.
