Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
Recently because of insurance changes we had to change our 6 month old baby's medication from the prevacid solutabs to the liquid compound made by the pharmacy. Since then, she has vomited every single first feeding of the day.

I am also very concerned about the fact that it is made with sodium bicarb. Babies are suppose to avoid sodium because of the strain it puts on their kidneys. Can anyone shed any info on these concerns?

Yes, too much sodium bicarb isnt great. The way I see it though is that my kid needs the meds to function properly. The amount of sodium bicarb actually in it (and he takes a giant dose) is worth the "risk" for us. You just have to weigh the pros and cons...

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
the way i justify it is if bubs is pukeing alot they are loosing sodium from the gut anyway to so that wil help replace it, if you are concered get the urea and electrolites checked

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
I'm not that knowledgeable about compounds, but
Have you thought of giving her prilosec capsules?
Is she able to sit up and drink well?
Eric was older when we started the capsules, but we just open them up and dump the beads out into his mouth and finish with a sip of water. They have no taste at all, and Eric was always able to do them just as easy as solutabs.
She may be too young to handle swallowing beads right now, but I wanted to give you the idea just in case, because it could be a good alternative for both you and your insurance, less trips to the pharm, and no sodium bicarb.

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
I used to be concerned cause like andreas son is on a big dose but the benefits definately outweigh the maybes. My son has been on compound 4 years and has his bloods taken at least every couple of months and there have been no issue from the bi carb. Generally compounding costs more so it is weird they don't do solutabs. Like Minnie said you could try swapping PPIs

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
Thanks for responding everyone. She would not be able to take the capsule beads by mouth because she will not eat or drink by mouth. I could mix it with water and syringe it into her mouth if it is a small enough dose. However, if it had any bad taste at all she would definitely gag and vomit it up. Also how would I know how much 7.5 mg is if it comes in a 30 mg capsule??

I called the GI doc to report that she has been vomiting every morning since starting the liquid prevacid. She probably does not even get her full dose anymore since we started the liquid because of the vomiting 30 -45 minutes after. Who knows?! The GI doctor's office never calls me back. I don't know if they are just slack, busy or just don't concern themselves with little questions and problems of such kind.

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
I am so sorry to hear all the troubles you are going through especially with the GI's office. They are supposed to be our partners in this. I had the same thing happen the last time Erin had a relapse and I called once the first day about 8 am waited until 330 pm and called again leaving a " wow did I must of left my message on wrong voice mail and repeated" Then the next morning I called again at 8am then 10 am and low and behold I got a return at 1025am. She changed meds and gave me emergency number to call over weekend and then she called me monday morning to make sure Erin was better. LOL I act like oh I know your so busy I was afraid I got lost somehow.I am not proud I call it fighting the good fight. I am not sure about prevacid coming in 7.5 tablets but I do know it comes in 15mg dosage because thats what my Erin takes. It is really such a small amount of beads even at 15mg. And it doesn't smell like it tastes bad??? Erin takes it no problem but hey she also takes Zantac with no problem now. I disolve in about 3ml of water and use a bulb syringe the other kind I had was too small for the beads

Re: Scared about the sodium in prevacid compound
Yes, I have done stuff like that a lot. I have also broken down in tears. It gets me far! The tears are real unfortunately because I am always at the end of my rope with the process.
