View Full Version : Elidel
sixdogssixcats 02-12-2006, 04:48 PM Catherine's face is getting covered with eczema. Who knows from what, and I'm not bothered about investigating right now. I have a bunch of Elidel samples from one of Trey's bouts, but I looked it up and it's not approved for children under 2. You think there's any problem with trying it?
Janette 02-12-2006, 04:52 PM Since she's so far away from being 2 yo., I don't think I'd want to try it without checking with the doctor or the pharmacist. Can you give the pharmacy a quick call and see what the pharmacist thinks?
sixdogssixcats 02-12-2006, 04:57 PM I'm pretty sure a pharmacist will say not to use any meds that aren't prescribed for her, lol!
Janette 02-12-2006, 05:02 PM Oh...I thought it was an over the counter med. I didn't realize it was prescription.
Leigh 02-12-2006, 05:20 PM Let's face it, we have all been prescribed things that are not in the age appropriate range for our kids. Having said that I would still caution you that your pharmacist would likely tell you not to use it because of the age issue and that it would not be wise of you to do it otherwise. (public service annnouncement # 53 lol)
What age did Trey start using it? I have no experience with it but maybe someone else has used it here for Catherine's age group.

Trey was 7, I think. It's for mild eczema and did not work for him.

DO NOT use that Elidel on Catherine.
I posted awhile back about Elidel cream. It is waiting to be pulled off the parmacy shelves as they found that cream to be causing cancer in children!!
I stopped using it the day I heard it on the news as that WAS the cream I used for Zachary's Eczema.

Lesley here is a link I found...
Of course it has settled since they oringinally broadcasted this maybe a month or so ago.
It doesn't state any reports but of course when it was on the news here in Michigan they said there were few proven cases of this and protopic cream giving children cancer...
Aside from the risk with her being so far away from two, I wouldn't try it.
Have you tried over the counter hydrocortisone cream? You could do a 1/2% on her.
sixdogssixcats 02-12-2006, 06:39 PM Thanks, Stacy, but a causal relationship has not been established. There have been reports of rare malignancies in children who have used Elidel long-term but not cause has been proven. Long-term use is not indicated for any age group.
Thanks for raising the concern, though. I thought I'd seen a post on here about it but couldn't remember the details. So I did some research and found the info above, which is now printed on the Elidel packaging.
We put some Aquaphor on it. That's just a lotion.
AndrewsMommy 02-12-2006, 06:51 PM Lesley....
I just thought it would be nice to raise the concern. I knew it had settled down some, but didn't follow the story any further as I discontinued it for Zachary. He had been using the cream since he was two years old throughout the fall and winter months and amazingly enough, *knocking on wood* he did not get it this year:iconbigg:
Noah's Mom 02-12-2006, 07:35 PM I have a mild case, and I just use Vaseline unless its gets too inflamed, and then I use a prescription I have called Metracream. I THINK thats the name. Anyways, if you cake vaseline on her before bed, she might have some relief by morning.

Always appreciated! It's hard to stay up with every bit of medical news -- good or bad -- so we rely on each other to fill in the gaps.
thepeach80 02-12-2006, 09:22 PM I guess I'm cautious as we stopped using it too. I'm not too fond of using anything that carries a black box warning from the FDA. That's the strongest warning they can put on a drug w/out pulling it from the shelves. Eczema in children this age is often related to allergies, but it's hard to know sometimes. I would probably try the hydrocortisone too and see what happens. I would stay away from the vaseline too b/c of the petrolatum? in it. It can actually inhibit the skin from absorbing moisture which is what it needs. We never had a serious problem so we never used much. Some of the reccomendations from our allergist were to use a dye/scent free detregent, always double rinse the boys' clothes, don't dry them off after a bath, just slather on the lotion, save washing for the very end of the bath so they're not sitting in soap, use Dove soap, and possible Cetaphil.
