View Full Version : Toddler growing out of it.... (ever? and another ?)
sbgrace 02-11-2006, 05:25 PM My son is two this month. While things are better than they were when he was a baby he still has wet burps and usually swallows whatever back down. On PPI's it doesn't seem to cause him pain. We've never been able to wean from the PPI and I'm afraid to even try again while he is still having the wet burps coming up in his mouth. I am assuming the wet burps are still reflux (scope showed gastritis which the GI doc said was indicative of reflux but no cause for the GERD). I just don't get it...there is no history of this in our family and his fraternal twin brother is fine.
My questions--once a child reaches two do they still have any chance of growing out of this? Also, the wet burps...they are reflux right? I guess I'm wondering how I will know if he is better....

Sorry! I just saw this post!
My sons are 6, 4, and 2. My eldest outgrew it closer to about 3 years of age, but he had stopped puking long before. We had our blue periods start when he stopped vomiting and the wet burps did indeed continue along with a chronic hoarse voice that he still has on numerous occassions still to this day.
My middle son was just diagnosed last year and finally put on meds after puking for over 3 years. He still has wet burps, gags, increased drool production at the age of 4. We have not tried to wean him off of prevacid yet, but we are doing well sometimes off the zantac. Once we have his chronic GI issues dealt with I am sure we can try to wean him.
My youngest just turned 2 and needs his meds very much still as he was my hardest hit with GERD.
Usually you try to wean them off slowly and see the results. Is the wet burps the only clue you have of reflux? What did he have as symptoms prior? You could talk to your ped or GI about a trial off and see how it goes.
Please post more information regarding how he was and is and we can help you better.
I am going to change this thread into the older child reflux forum. You may get more responses there.
Janette 02-12-2006, 12:43 PM Evan is nearly 4 and doing better than he was at 2 years. I'm still hoping that he's going to outgrow this one day.
ElisMom 02-12-2006, 07:11 PM I don't know the answer to this as our son is 3 1/2 and has had the fundo. But, hopefully, it will get better for you guys, Hang in there!
melba19 02-12-2006, 07:41 PM I am sorry to hear that your little one is still having problems. My youngest will be five and continues to improve reflux wise. He is doing better today then he did at age 2yrs.
I see that you had a scope and I was wondering if your biopsies showed any eociniphills? The reason being is that this can cause the esophagitis and make the reflux worse. My son has eosiniphillic gastritis and esophagitis and has always had this. I know that if there are eosiniphills they are a reaction to an allergeant and if you can clear them up can take away the reflux problems.

sbgrace 02-13-2006, 01:08 PM Wet burps are the only clue we have right now. Well, I guess the gastritis was another possible sign maybe. When I tried to put him on zantac about 6 weeks ago he was in pain with those wet burps within three days--that could have been rebound acid though???--I was so shocked it happened that quickly.
Prior symptoms--he always had reflux but his twin brother had so many health problems that Andrew's symptoms were brushed off by the pediatrician who didn't want to medicate him. He got more difficult to feed (breastmilk via bottle). Then, at almost 3 months he began spitting up blood. He was put on prilosec and by 4 months he stopped spitting up blood but the reflux and bottle aversion continued. We woke and fed him several times at night while he was asleep. We fell off the growth curve. He started physical therapy at 6 months for gross motor delays they think due to tone being on the lower end of normal and pain. He has since had delays in all areas but we have no diagnosis. He continued on a PPI through his first year. At that point he was still spitting up but less. We tried to lower the dosage of PPI and refusing to eat, sitting up in bed (I guess to keep the acid down) and chronic ear infections started. At 18 months, he was spitting up only rarely just doing the wet burp thing. Sometime after that we tried again to go off the PPI (unsuccessfully--again to zantac). At 22 months we were finally referred to the pediatric GI who did an upper GI/scope. All was clear (no eos disease which is what they had suspected). The pediatric GI has been no help since then...including when I asked the questions I've asked here. She just shrugged her shoulders and said she didn't know. That's why I'm here...I have no clue what to do for him or how to know when to wean the meds (or how).
I guess just keep him on the PPI while he is still doing wet burps--is that what you would do? I just started wondering if maybe I was assuming wet burps meant reflux only because he has always had reflux.
When I do wean, do you cut the dose down slowly, cut one dose out, do it every other day? Obviously going to zantac didn't work...
AndrewsMommy 02-13-2006, 01:28 PM I don't have that direct answer for you but, if I were you, I would be taking him to a new doctor or Gi to get those answers. It is obvious that you are left clueless because your doctor, like many of ours, don't want to give you those answers.
I wish you and your little Andrew luck, and hope things get resolved soon:)
melba19 02-13-2006, 05:28 PM Has any of your docs explained to you that as the child grows and gets older that the vomiting can be related to delayed gastric emptying. You will see infants spit up but as they get older this usually will stop and if continues usually a different problem.
My son has severe delayed gastric emptying which means his stomach empties slower or not at all sometimes. He would vomit and bring up food that he had eaten many hours before. He also had wet burps which brought up food but he would swallow it back down. I was wondering if your son has had a gastric emptying study done?
This study could help and see if there is a delay. If there is a delay that could contribute to the reflux. When the stomach is full and doesnt empty when you put more in it will come back up. My son is on motility drugs presently to help with this.
I think if possible it might be time to go and see a new peds gi doc for a second opion. It is always good to go and see what a new doc thinks. My children have had many second opions and found them to be very helpful. I do wish you luck and hope that things improve.

ElisMom 02-13-2006, 05:31 PM I agree with Mel on this as well, our son had serious emptying problems as well. let us know, OK?

Sorry to jump in here for a sideline, but I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about the eosinophillic gastritis, Melanie? I had done a bit of research on this and have had some tell me to have Curran tested for it as he has massive bowel issues and seems sensitive or allergic to most of what he eats. His reflux is definately worse when he is having bowel problems and he is 4 years old now. Thanks in advance!:iconbigg:
scarlet 02-14-2006, 07:56 AM At my last GI Appt, she told me that the next time that we will try and be med free is about 2 years and then when it is summer with less chance of infection to get as well, this will lead us to 2 1/2 and she said that the extra 6 months on it won't hurt. I'm am hoping that when I wean him he will be magicall better but I am not sure I live with the hope though. I would wait until summer and try and reduce your PPI and see how he goes, he may still have the reflux but not to the same degee and may not need as much or even no medicine. Are there other tests that you have looked out to see if there are other problems first? Also I think it is quite common that one twin and not the other has it and even though there doesn't seem to be a family history, most people do find someone in there family with it somewhere

I was shocked at how many people have this in our family. It was truly illuminating and a good chance to find out what other problems that could be genetic our family holds.
