Ok, I just got home from the ER with Grace (4 years old)
She woke up this morning @ 5am and said that her bottom burned. I thought, UTI, she's had them before. When she got back up, she had a red, raised area on the top of her legs, between her legs. She cried and cried and cried. Finally I put Balmex on it and gave her some Tylenol. She didn't move from the couch all day! Dh got home around 1pm and we pulled her panties down and it was WEEPING on the top of her pelvic area and the whole area was red and swollen. She then had a low grade fever and DARK CIRCLES under her eyes (it didn't help that she is really pale)
So, we went to the Er. Didn't wait long, her temp. was 100 and her pulse was 99 (nurse didn't say anything about this) She has contact dermatitis. Duh! I could have diagnosed that one. the area is infected so the infection was diagnosed as Cellulitis. :smt102 Never heard of it. So basically she is allergic to something, we don't know what. She ate nothing different, I have not changed soap, detergent, etc. It is sooooo weird and driving me bonkers!:smt101 She is really sick, hasn't eaten, doesn't want to and acts like she's going to get sick. He prescribed her a topical cream and an antibiotic.
So, I have been thinking for a long time that SOMETHING is bothering them (something that they eat)
this morning somewhere asked a question about diaper rash and corn starch powder, we used to have the same problem, just lately really, Grace would get horrible bumps on the back part of her bottom, I quit using powder, it went away. Corn? Maybe, who knows! Baby powder does have some form of corn in it, correct?
Should I have her tested? Or try eliminating all corn from her diet, that would be so much food, seeing as corn is in every blasted thing you can think of.
Opinions please! The rash has a fever in it and is not bumpy, but galded.
:smt100 :smt100 :smt100

If it's CONTACT dermatitis, it's something that touched her skin, not something she ate.

New laundry detergent? Maybe she didn't rinse well after a bath last night and left soap to dry on her skin? New underwear that wasn't washed before the first wearing?

Good luck figuring out what it is!

Poor little thing! :(

Did she touch any cleaners or plants?

Thanks Lesley! LOL
You did answer one question for me! The dr. did not explain that it wouldn't be something that she ingested. Hmm..... the only thing that I can think of is she was in TO yesterday and she said that she had to go potty. I told her no, I thought that she was bluffing, she does this all of the time! She peed in her pants and a puddle onto the floor. But, she TOOK A BATH LAST NIGHT! It is so bad this evening, the front of her panties are wet from the puss. Nasty. Poor thing, I believe that she is asleep now, and will hopefully sleep all night.

Poor Grace. I hope she'll sleep good and feel better tomorrow. Hopefully you can figure out what caused that.

Poor little thing. You have to keep it as dry as possible and change her pants often, if possible no pants. Also use cotton if you can. Are you sure that the detergent was the same amount/brand nothing different in the wash pre wash stain removers? Cause if there is a possbility every time she is putting on her pants it will be irritating it again. My boys can't use general washing powders and we use OMO sensitive and or soap flakes, and even then at half strength. Even some sensitive brands can give them a breakout. If this hapens I have to re wash all their clothes and start again. I hope that she is feeling better real soon

Our ped. saw Grace for a follow up to the rash on Wed. and thinks that it was either strep or staph! Nice, without a culture he couldn't say 100%, but our piddley (word?) ER didn't take one. :banghead: If we hadn't taken her to the ER she would have been really really sick.
Doctors, or ours in this town any way, crappy!:smt021 Somebody said it perfectly that apparently you have to be an idiot to go to medical school! They aren't all like that, but down here, there are more idiots than not, that is why we drive 60 miles to someone who knows their A&* from a hole in the ground!

What is staph? I've heard of it, but that's about all.

You know Janette, your guess is as good as mine. All I know is that the ped. said that it lays dormant in our body. I do know that it can be very dangerous **death** if not treated. I will research and let you know.

I've only heard of staph as being "some kind of illness" you can catch while you're in the hospital :dontknow: that's about all I know about it. Poor grace,t hat sounds awful!

Janette~ here is what I found
Staph- a normal skin germ that's harmless until it gets into a cut or open sore, then goes into the bloodstream, can cause sepsis or poison of the blood which can lead to death.
Also related to Scalded skin syndrome *I think this is what hers was*
A side effect of staph bacteria loosens the "cement" holding the layers of skin together. This allows blisters and sloughing of othe top layer of skin. Occurs predominately in children un 5 years of age AKA Ritter disease. ***Her skin looked like it was scalded*** it is a good thing that they gave her the right med. It also said that staph doesn't react to all kinds of antibiotics.
*whew* we got lucky on that one!

No, I didn't and now if they aren't bleeding or their eyeballs are in their sockets, we will drive to the ER 60 miles away instead of going here by our house!:hairpull:

You might look up MRSA, I think that's the initials. http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa_ca_public.html It's a staph infection, but it's resistant to all but 1 abx I think. I have a friend who's had 2 of her kids get this. It's VERY serious and very contagious. I would have her taken in ASAP and have them address this.

What does a staph or MRSA infection look like?
Staph bacteria, including MRSA, can cause skin infections that may look like a pimple or boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage. More serious infections may cause pneumonia, bloodstream infections, or surgical wound infections.

How is Grace feeling now, Emily? That sucks that you have to drive 60 miles to a good ER. You'd think St. Louis would have plenty of good resources! I know Cardinal Glennon has an ER with a ped GI always on call. Our old GI gave us the info incase of an emergency with Noah that we didn't think our rinky dink hospital could handle.

I have a friend who's 18 mo. son has a staph infection that won't go away. I don't think it causes any problems for him other than a mild rash in his diaper area, but I know she's been battling it for what seems like forever.
