View Full Version : Corn Starch -> Diaper Rash -> Allergy???

Hi ladies,

Sorry I haven't had time to post this week (life is chaos - 2 kids w/ raging molluscum contagiosum infections presently covered in head to toe blisters from cantharone treatment, 1 dog w/horrid worms, and oddly enough, the healthiest one is the wee little refluxer.)

But onto my question - I've kind of known for a while that baby powder causes Heidi to get diaper rash so I try to use it very sparingly. This morning in a rush I put some on hoping maybe that was all coincidence. But when I changed her diaper next there it was - raging diaper rash. At this point I know it is caused by the baby powder. So I started reading my baby powder bottle more closely and noticed the type I was using was pure corn starch.

So here are my questions:
1) has anyone else had topical cornstarch cause a diaper or other rash?
2) do you think this could be an allergy? (important one as I'm starting on solid foods)
3) interestingly as I label read I notice that both powdered nutramigen and powdered Alimentum are high in corn by-products (neither of which Heidi can tolerate) - but the RTF Alimentum which she is on doesn't appear to have any corn in it - do you think this is coincidence - should I do anything about all of this (aside from throwing out all my baby powder?)

Thanks for your thoughts.

Let me explain it in a different way. Happy baby, no diaper rash. Add baby powder and 3 to 4 hours laters, wham-o red all over her bottom. Treat with Desitin for a day or so and we're back to happy baby, no diaper rash.

I don't know about the rash, it does sound like it. You are right that the RTF Alimentum doesn't have the corn in it. What is she on right now?? If not on Nutramigen, try giving it to her for a while, see how she does, then if she reacts you will have your answer.
Interesting about the powder, I used to use it on my girls still (they are 4) Grace would have HORRIBLE bumps on her bottom (her cheeks) I never could figure out what it was from, then I quit using the powder and it went away! I didn't always use the one with cornstarch in it though, I wonder if all powder has some form of corn starch??? This could be OUR behavior problems, they could have an allergy to corn!
Thanks, you got me thinking too!:iconbigg:
