View Full Version : Mark green beans off of our list
Emily M 02-07-2006, 08:30 PM Ok, Jackson and I have started the scarey journey of solids. I was nervous about gagging, but he took his rice cereal off of a spoon last week with no problem. YEAHOO!:happy4: So, today I thought we will start veggies. I bought some greenbeans. He ate them like he was starved. A few minutes pass, then he starts SCREAMING! Arching and thrashing, my dh said, "what is wrong with him?" Reflux, I say. He really doesn't think it is as bad as I make it out to be, but IT IS!
Anyway, I guess I will try one more time to be sure, but, oh my! That was bad!
Anyone else get that reaction with greenbeans???:smt010
sarahh 02-08-2006, 02:12 AM Here, they recommend not to do ggreen beans until 8-9 months of age as they are quite hard on the digestive system.... I would definitely give them a miss until he's a bit older. The orange veges are generally the best ones to start with as supposedly they are easier on the digestive system, which is important for a GERDLing. No hurry for your little guy though... he has plenty of time!
OwensMom 02-08-2006, 02:20 AM Poor little Jackson. We started out with the orange veggies first since they are easier to digest and waited until he was 6 months old. He had a rough start with solids and we stopped them until about 7.5 months old and tried again. He still has reactions to a lot of them but we have a few that he can eat now.
Maybe you could try giving him squash or something like that. Good luck on the solids.
CadysMommy 02-08-2006, 05:23 AM I would start out with orange veggies first or even fruit first. It honestly doesn't matter which order you start in. Cady started with squash, then we moved to applesauce, then carrots, then bananas, then sweet potatoes, then pears...honestly, she never did just green veggies. She wouldn't touch them. There's always time when they get older to introduce things. Cady didn't have green beans until after she was one, when she was able to eat them cut up out of a can.
Emily M 02-08-2006, 08:21 AM Thank you girls! I didn't know that the orange veggies were easier on them. Guess I should have asked before I gave them to him! Oh well, now I know!:smt043
Emily M 02-09-2006, 07:38 AM So, last night we went to orange veggies, as the green beans did a number on him. He had carrots, loved them! Absolutely gobbled them down. And didn't have a problem with them! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:smt023 :hello1: :blob7:
OwensMom 02-09-2006, 07:41 AM Yay Jackson, :blob: glad that he is doing well with the carrots. They are a big no no in this house, since Owen gets a horrible diaper rash from them.

Poor baby.:smt056 Jackson ate a 2.5 oz jar tonight of carrots, he LOVES THEM!:smt036
thepeach80 02-10-2006, 08:43 AM Green beans are also a legume and in the soy family so many babies w/ soy problems, have problems w/ these too.
Have you got the formula straightened out yet? I would reccomend next time he fails a food, to wait a few days before starting a new one in case he has a delayed reaction as well.
Minnie 02-10-2006, 09:10 AM Oh MAN! That sucks!
And I so know what you're talking about with DH. He still thinks his bad nights are due to nightmares (eye roll)
Eric's GI and peds all agreed that the best way to introduce solid with a tummy troubled baby is from light to dark. It doesn't matter veggies or fruits, just as long as it's light to dark. They said the same for juices, but Eric can't and won't be doing juice for a while.
So Eric started with pears (bananas and potatoes are good too, but Eric had constipation troubles so we didn't go there) Then yellow squash, apples, and so on until the colors became darker.
This theory held pretty true with Eric. It seemed the darker we went the harder time we had.
So sorry. Eric did wonderful with all the green veggies, just a little gas, but all the orange fruits and veggies are still on our "no no" list
Ever baby is so different, and it sucks that we have to keep trying never knowing what's going to go badly or not.
Emily M 02-12-2006, 07:53 PM Thanks girls!
Jennifer, I guess we will stick with Nutramigen for now, I'm going to the ped. on Wed. will question him then. His big feeding refusal was he is cutting 3 teeth, the one on the bottom that is usually first and his two cuspids! ACK!:banghead: He is miserable! I've been doing one food a day and giving it about 3 days to see how it goes!
Minnie, thanks for the advice, I probably should have waited and talked to our dr. he probably would have told us the same thing, but he wasn't taking his bottles so I thought I would give it a try.
Jennifer- duh! to me about soy and green beans, if I would think a little bit, I would figure these things out!!!!! He screamed after he ate them! At least for now we know no no no green beans!
AndrewsMommy 02-12-2006, 08:09 PM How did I miss this one!
Orange veggies are usually introduced first!!
I am glad Jackson didn't react to anything else except the green beans:)
How are things now?? Still doing good?
Emily M 02-12-2006, 08:12 PM Really good! I didn't know that the orange ones were first! With the twins I just went willy nilly and gave them whatever! They were so very easy! He has now had Bananas, Pears, and Carrots, he likes the carrots better than the fruits! I gave him applesauce tonight, he wasn't too crazy about it, but maybe in time.
He does have a diaper rash (unusual) I wonder if it's the carrots?? I will stop them and see if it goes away!

I hope that it's not the carrots. It stinks when they can't eat a lot of things. Owen enjoys sweet potatoes, green beans, applesauce, pears, bananas and avocadoes. I want to try squash and see how he does with it. I'm always too afraid to try new things in case he reacts.
Emily M 02-14-2006, 08:41 PM Melanie~ he hasn't had carrots in a couple of days and the rash is gone. What did Owen's look like when he had his?? Did it just look like a diaper rash??? That is what this was, wasn't real bad, but his first diaper rash.
So, maybe I will wait a week and try carrots again and see what happens!
Minnie 02-15-2006, 08:25 AM Eric got a regular diaper rash when I gave him carrots too. I think if I was to give him a whole serving he would probably still get a diaper rash with them, but I only feed him a little bit now and then and he seems O.K. with them in small amounts.
