View Full Version : Tofu and shelf life question about baby food
ZacsMom 02-06-2006, 08:32 AM Does any give tofu to their toddler? I am just curious if that's ok for babies (that can tolerate soy, of course). Also...I notice on most of his table time foods or gerber graduates it says "use w/in 2-3 days". Do you REALLY think that is true or could it be that they just want you to toss it and keep buying more frequently?
CadysMommy 02-06-2006, 08:41 AM I don't know about tofu, since Cady's somewhat sensitive to soy...oh, plus ICK! I won't eat it, so I won't make Cady. Cady's food rarely even makes it to the 2-3 day mark, since she eats like a pig, I have kept jarred fruits and veggies in the fridge for about 5 days, tops and it never made her sick. I don't see why you shouldn't be able to keep the graduates stuff in the fridge tightly sealed for 4-5 days, if you haven't fed Zac directly from the package.
ZacsMom 02-06-2006, 08:49 AM Right. I've been opening his pasta bites and some beans (for example) for him...i give him a few squares of pasta bites and a tbsp of beans ADDED to his two jars of baby food for his meals. I seal the rest of it and continue to take parts of each to add w/his meals. I dont see why they'd go bad after 2 days. I guess they dont have preservatives but still. :dontknow: hmm..
OwensMom 02-06-2006, 08:50 AM Can't give you any advice on the tofu since we don't eat it.
I usually keep the food 3-4 days in the fridge and Owen never got sick.
sixdogssixcats 02-06-2006, 09:43 AM I love tofu, and my son has eaten it since he was able. I didn't think about giving it to Catherine, but I think I will. She eats soy yogurt, which is essentially the same thing.
Noah's Mom 02-06-2006, 10:56 AM Hey, I like tofu. Zac might, too!
I'm a nerd, and I keep a sharpie in the fridge  , and when I open a jar, I put the date and time on the lid so that I can dispose of it before 3 days. Stop laughing....
ZacsMom 02-06-2006, 01:00 PM I keep a sharpie also...and I date the food...but i just wanted to know if I could technically keep it an extra day or two.
Becky in NM 02-06-2006, 01:05 PM Our neighbor is 13 months old, and he was scarfing down tofu last night at our superbowl party. He is lactose intolerant and takes the soy milk.
lucyinaz 02-06-2006, 03:26 PM Um... soy/tofu - ok!
Shelf life... once opened, I only keep stuff for 2-3 days, tops. I'm like that with big people food, too. :) (Unless it's my grandma's meatloaf... that I'll keep for 4 days and nuke the heck out of it. LOL)
sarahh 02-07-2006, 12:57 AM Okay, tofu is on the meal plan here in NZ due to our polynesian population that eat this alot. They recommend from 9-10 months on. So I'd say, go for it!
I stick to the "use in ......days" recommendations because I don't want to be responsible for any food poisoning happening in this house (that's 'cos I'm a food nerd )
ZacsMom 02-07-2006, 07:15 AM Just watned to say I spoke w/ped and she said go ahead w/the tofu ;) thanks ladies
EmmasMommy 02-07-2006, 09:52 PM LOL, Maggie. When Emma was eating babyfood I put the date on the jar, too.
ZacsMom 02-08-2006, 08:57 AM Now i'm wondering if i can freeze tofu...i guess i dont see why not. I diddn't think that I want to try milk on him today and dont want to give him tofu same timeframe. Not that he hasn't had things w/soy in it before I'm sure.

Yes, you can freeze tofu, but it will change the texture. I have recipes that call for freezing then thawing the tofu so that it will have a choppier texture.
