View Full Version : Rice Chex and Cream of Wheat
Noah's Mom 02-03-2006, 05:32 PM I picked up these two, hoping to try them on Noah, but I have a few questions. I ate a few rice chex, and they seem a bit hard and they don't dissolve quickly. Will he choke on these? Also, is there any reason Noah can't have Cream of Wheat?
sixdogssixcats 02-03-2006, 06:28 PM Catherine loves both of those. She's been eating rice chex for several months now. They're much more fragile than cheerios, which I just recently started letting her have. Cream of Wheat, if you get the flavored instant packets and mix it with formula instead of water, is a good high-calorie meal. Catherine will eat up to half a packet mixed according to package directions. It does take forever to cool, though, so make it ahead of time.
Janette 02-03-2006, 06:44 PM You could try hot water or hot milk/formula on the chex. It'll help them to dissolve more quickly. Maybe even break them up a bit before adding the liquid.
lucyinaz 02-03-2006, 06:51 PM You should be good to go on both of those. Ian loves Cream of Wheat/MaltoMeal... chex... well... not too sure there. He likes dry cereal, sometimes. It's a good place to start!
ZacsMom 02-03-2006, 07:38 PM I bought Zac some chex but I've been scared to give them. Soaking them a bit before hand will help if you are worried about it though. Lesley's right about making the cream of wheat ahead of time. It gets SUPER hot. Zac doesn't like it unless I mix a tad bit of fruit in there.
sixdogssixcats 02-03-2006, 07:47 PM Catherine eats rice chex as a dry snack, not as a cereal with milk or any other kind of liquid. They help with her self-feeding skills since she won't touch anything that isn't hard and/or dry.
CadysMommy 02-03-2006, 08:01 PM I've been afraid to try the rice chex, too. Cady's not a big fan of cream of wheat unless it's got butter and brown sugar in it. I might try the Chex this weekend, though. Cady needs more practice with crunchy things.
Nathan'sMommy 02-03-2006, 09:26 PM Rice chex are a hit here too. Never tried the cream of wheat, but good idea. ;)

This is what I had in mind for the chex. Noah's not into wet finger foods either. He'll attempt at least one bite of anything that is dry. He usually just ignores anything wet on his tray. If he does happen to take one bite, it almost always ends up in gagging until he barfs. Yuck.
Yup--Bethy doesn't like anything wet or sticky. *lol* I haven't tried Chex, but Cheerios and Kix were fine with her (There's an organic version of Kix with no dairy...I can't remember the name, though)
I have given her bites of my Cream of Wheat (made w/ water) and she really likes it. You've given me a good idea--i'll try mixing it w/ her Nutramigen!
Noah's Mom 02-04-2006, 03:01 PM Noah reacted to the cream of wheat within about 1/2 hour. The rash is showing up, and he's very irritable. Here we go again.

OwensMom 02-06-2006, 09:21 AM Oh no, poor Noah. It's so hard to figure out what they can eat. Did you try the Rice Chex yet? I haven't tried them with Owen yet but maybe I'll give him some later today.
Noah's Mom 02-06-2006, 11:02 AM No, I haven't had the courage to try the rice chex, but I've eaten about half the box!
Nathan'sMommy 02-06-2006, 11:43 AM No, I haven't had the courage to try the rice chex, but I've eaten about half the box!
I hear you! I think I have gained 10 lbs since Nathan started solids. You know - "One bite for Nathan, one bite for mommy." Argggg :smt047
Patsy had a good point about the rice crispies! They are great to start with. :D
