View Full Version : How often should I give him Lactulose? ConnorsMommy 01-28-2006, 08:52 PM Hi I was just wondering how often do you give your gerdlings Lactulose? Everyday? How long before it helped? OwensMom 01-29-2006, 04:10 AM Owen takes 2.5mls twice a day, although lately I noticed I don't have to give it to him all the time anymore. It took about 2 days before he had regular soft stools. Did your ped prescribe it for Connor, if so just ask the pharmacist about the dosage for him. Leigh 01-29-2006, 09:43 AM We have lactulose here but it was not working. The idea behind it was the same as our mineral oil in that the goal is to get frequent normal stools. We were told to go with a dose (my guy is 4 years old so it would not be the same) that creates a diarrhea of sorts for a day or two and then adjust the dose until you get one good poop (think mashed potatoes or applesauce consistancy) every day or every 2 days. It is a matter of constant adjustment not a set dose everyday. You will really need to guage the stools. If the stools look harder, drier, smaller then add in more lactulose. If they get too loose, cut back. The trick is knowing how far either way to go with your dose. That is what we were supposed to do but I have not given this to an infant before. Do make sure plenty of fluids are available for when you give it as it makes them thirsty (it did my middle son) and besides it is supposed to work by changing the ph of the intestines and bringing water with it to them in order to soften the stools. EmmasMommy 01-29-2006, 09:46 AM Emma was only on it for awhile because it made her very crampy and gassy. I think she was on 1/2 tsp. once a day. It didn't work for us. :( I would ask your doctor or pharmacist for the exact dosage for Connor. I think it depends on the child's weight. ConnorsMommy 01-29-2006, 01:20 PM His Dr. said to give him 1/4 to 1/2 tsp once or twice a day as needed. I just wasn't sure if once he pooped I should stop giving it to him or if It was something he needed everyday. He pooped today!!!!!! Becky in NM 01-29-2006, 01:22 PM Daniel was on Enulose for awhile. The GI had us start with a larger dose (sorry, can't remember how much) for three days, then we could back off. He said to allow three days for each change in amount. We dosed him just once a day. Leigh 01-29-2006, 01:35 PM His Dr. said to give him 1/4 to 1/2 tsp once or twice a day as needed. I just wasn't sure if once he pooped I should stop giving it to him or if It was something he needed everyday. He pooped today!!!!!! The idea is to get to the point where you do not need it at all. If you find that he is pooping well then reduce the dose and keep reducing it every couple of days until he is on such a low dose you can discontinue it. Does that make sense? ConnorsMommy 01-29-2006, 09:44 PM Yep makes sense! He finally pooped today and it wasn't like pebbles (sorry tmi) I gave him 1/2 tsp one time so hopefully that will do the trick. I'll try the same tomorrow and see how it goes! Leigh 01-30-2006, 08:34 PM Yay on the poop!:iconbigg: TMI????? Have you ever read one of MY threads on my kids poop????!!!!!!!!! I am sure that I could make a GI sick! LOL Minnie 01-31-2006, 09:24 AM Our GI asked how often Eric goes when off his zantac. I told him 3 to 4 times a day. So he had us give Eric Lactulose 3 times a day. I for the life of me can't remember how much, but he said that we would have to adjust the dose until it was the right consistency and regular every day. We were to do this by emailing each other everyday. (How cool is THAT) But lucky us! the first dose we tried worked like a charm! It took about 3 days before he was popping good, and about a week or so for the gas to get better Leigh 01-31-2006, 06:48 PM Emailing your GI everyday is WAY COOL!:smt041 I wish I could do that. Then again, updates on Curran's poop would probably get a GI to take a vacation in short order....:smt043 |
