View Full Version : parent support
Sam's Mom 01-27-2006, 08:55 PM Sam is enrolled in an Infant and Toddler Program thru the school system. He gets PT/OT and some other services in the home. He has a vision instructer who works with him because there is some question about his vision (diagnosed with optic nerve atrophy) He does seem to have some vision because he tracks objects, just not as well as he should--another thing we have to wait and see how he progresses!
Well, I joined a parent support group started by his vision teacher. The first meeting was today. I just wanted to share that I felt very comfortable with these women who I just met. It really does help when you surround yourself with people who are in the same boat as you--I guess that is why I am here.
So, if anyone has a chance to join a support group like this for your "special needs" kids I encourage you to do so--it really felt good and I am looking forward to the next meeting.
EmmasMommy 01-27-2006, 09:08 PM Amanda,
I'm so happy for you! It is nice to be around people that understand what you're going through on a day-to-day basis. That's why I LOVE this place.
How often do they meet? Is there food?!?! :smt047
sixdogssixcats 01-27-2006, 09:11 PM How wonderful, Amanda! I'm sure that group will help you move forward with Sam.
Noah's Mom 01-27-2006, 09:18 PM That's great, Amanda. Its must be so nice to speak with others that understand what Sam is going through. I think it says a lot about you for joining the group. Its great that you were able to reach out. There are others who never do.
Sam's Mom 01-27-2006, 10:07 PM Too funny Amanda--yes there was food! We are going to meet once a month and we will take turns with the snacks! I tried to exercise some self control and I just had a diet pepsi! I have 2 pregnancies worth of excess "baggage" I am trying to loose!
Leigh 01-27-2006, 10:38 PM How wonderful that the vision teacher saw a need for a support group and started one! I often wished in the early days with Iain that there was a support group here for GERD, but that is why I am here. Besides, I would probably never get out of the meeting room based on how many times I am pulled to post here!:smt043
I hope that it gives you the support you need and deserve, Amanda. Forgive me, but was he finally diagnosed with Cornelia deLang? I may have missed some threads.
**psst! When it is your turn to host the snacks, do not exercise "self control", ok?!**
Keep us updated.
EmmasMommy 01-27-2006, 11:22 PM Too funny Amanda--yes there was food! We are going to meet once a month and we will take turns with the snacks!
LOL. I love meetings with food! I am going scrapbooking with a few members of DH's family once my grad school is finished. I am looking forward to getting all of Em's pictures organized, but what got me to go was the free pizza and pop that's provided!
zapsmom 01-28-2006, 10:28 AM Amamnda, you are right about finding a support group for your child's special needs. They are great! I was able to go for one that only went for 6 weeks but it was great to go too.
Leigh 01-28-2006, 10:43 AM Shannon, I thought you still went to the meetings. I know how much you have on your plate right now, though. When is the latest one due? It is coming up fast!
LOL Amanda! Your motivation for meetings is hilarious! I had a PTA meeting on Thursday and as I had no dinner and they sat a plate of cookies in front of me I chowed big time! I got some looks, but hey!
Sorry, did not mean to hijack thread.
Janette 01-29-2006, 11:39 AM Hey Leigh...I didn't realize that you're a member of School Council too.
That's awesome that you've found a support group for mom's with the same special needs as Sam, Amanda! I've had a couple of those, and it's amazing to have that time with others who know and understand what you're going through!
Leigh 01-30-2006, 08:51 PM Hey Leigh...I didn't realize that you're a member of School Council too.
I got sucked in. Like a tiny fish to the propeller of the Titanic.
Worse yet, they assigned me all sorts of sub committees. I have learned now NOT to make suggestions or seem like I know what I am talking about. I just sit back and eat cookies and then I do not get any more work assigned to me.
:smt043
How often does your group meet?
