Hi everyone!

Well, we're finally trying out the Zantac. A little background info first - Since Gaby seemed to have a mild case of silent reflux, my pediatrician wanted to try the no meds approach first. While the Enfamil with addred rice starch is helping reduce spit up, little Gabriella is still suffering some awful pain with the GER. Since she was losing sleep from pain, refusing some feeds(bottle aversion) and having milk come out of her nose we finally reached the point where we need some meds to stop the pain and discomfort.

It's day 2 on Zantac and it's probably too early to tell if it's working. She hasn't screamed bloody murder since she' been on it, which is a good sign. She also seems to sleep more calmly at night, no more wriggling , squirming with pain, etc.

I wanted to ask you how you administer the meds. We had conflicting orders from the ped and the pharmacist. The ped said to give it twice a day and to give it just before her feed and then give her a bottle to sort of wash it down. The pharmacist said to give it to her 30 miinutes before the feed. I guess the pharmacist would know more. I like the ped's suggestion. She doesn't like it and I would rather give it to her just before the feed so she can drink the formula right away to ease taste. How do you adminster Zantac? I want to make sure it will work properly. What do you think? Follow pharmiscist orders or ped's orders. I may have a look in a little drug reference book we have at home.

Thanks in advance!

Lucy

Gabriella 3 mths old diagnosed with GER at 7-8 weeks, on Zantac .7ml twice daily ( a very conservative ped - which is cool, he wants to start low and see how she does, also when it comes time to wean her off, it'll be easier for her)

Hi I have always given Connor his Zantac right before his meals per his Ped and GI but I have heard so much conflicting information I'm not sure whats right. It did always seem to help Connor! I usually mix Connor's Zantac with just a little bit of formula ( just enough to cover the bottom of the bottle) and he sucks it down with no problem. We call it his mint milk! I hope the Zantac helps Gaby!!!!

Hi and welcome! First off, one of my twins is Gabriela! She is also called Gabby!
We were on Zantac in the beginning. I found the most success doing 30 min. prior to eating, but if that doesn't work, right before bottle is better than not at all.
It will take a while to notice a difference. My ped. told us a week, I saw a difference the next day, but a lasting difference within a week, if that makes sense!
good luck!

Emma takes her Zantac before her bath. So, depending on how long the bath takes (sometimes she plays longer), get her dressed, and the time it takes to make the bottle - I would say 20-30 minutes have gone by.

Our GI has Emma on Zantac at bedtime only. She is also on Prevacid, so he told us it does not really "matter" when we give it to her. The Prevacid is still in her system but the Zantac is being used as extra protection during the nighttime hours.

Her prescription states to administer with a meal. However, based on what I've read about Zantac, Emma takes her Zantac 20-30 minutes before her bottle.

I was told my our pedi to give it 30 min before he eats. That's really all she said and also no Mylanta within an hour of the Zantac. HTH

Amanda, does the Zantac help her to sleep better? We are on both and I wondered if I should do the same thing with jackson's Zantac.
Thanks!:iconbigg:

No - we didn't see any changes in her sleep, but she started taking her bottles much better during the day. Coincidence? Not sure, but I like to think the Zantac helped!

She started on the Zantac in November, and from Emma's sleep log it hasn't made any difference at night. Sorry. :( But, that doesn't mean it won't help Jackson. I would talk to the doctor and see if you can arrange the Zantac dosages so one is administered before bedtime. It doesn't hurt to try! :iconbigg:

Emma's nightwakings have decreased in half, (from 5-6 nightwakings on a GOOD night), to 3 nightwakings. This has happened in the last three weeks when we started taking out all soy and millk from her diet.

Thank you to everyone!

Looks like the majority administer it 20 -30 minutes before a feed. I will follow pharmacist's suggestion.

Thanks again!

Hi, when zac was using zantac we were specifically told by the ped. to give it 30 min. before his milk. I know others do it differently but I think this is how you see the most effectiveness from it. Just try to syringe it as far back between the cheek and gums as you can so she tastes as little of it as possible. Zac got use to the taste after a while.

I, too, think it's most effective given before the meal... though my daughter had such a hard time with it I just put it in her bottles... now I do either, in her bottle or give it straight. She doesnt mind the taste now that she's been getting it so long! :)

First and foremost - Be careful with the syrup form - it has alcohol and makes sleeping worse. There is an effervescent form that is better!

Also, watch for bowel cramps - my son had horrific cramps with zantac - both forms. We now use zantac only for an acute attack and it works. My son is on prevacid which is a continous acid inhibitor.

As far as how to administer, my doc and pharmacist said nothing about waiting on the zantac side. Although it does make sense to let it reduce the acid before you put food in it.

Hope that helps.
