View Full Version : Prevacid side effects?

Hey everyone,

DD was on a Zantac/Maalox combo. She was doing well for a couple weeks and then the effects seemed to be wearing off. Our ped wouldn't give her a higher Zantac dose, and she suggested we swtich to Prevacid.

She's been on it for a couple days and her sleep habits are *much* worse. She barely stays asleep for more than 30 minutes day or night. We have a really hard time getting her to fall asleep at all. So she gets very tired and cranky -- which makes falling asleep even harder. I got desparate last night and flipped her on her tummy in bed with me. She slept for 3.5 hours straight...but of course I was up staring at her all night b/c of my paranoia with SIDS.

Has anyone ever found that Prevacid made things worse? Does it make some babies more restless?

Thanks,
Nicole

Hmm.... we have been on Prevacid for 2 weeks now, Jackson's been on a down hill slide for 5 days, with sleep.
I wonder if this is our problem as well.
No, I don't think it is, Jackson hasn't slept well from the get go!

My son has been on Prevacid for 8 days now. He usually sleeps from 8:30 to 6:00 waking up for a feeding at 2:30 & 4:00. For the past 2 days now I'm waking up every 2 hours with him. Its more of a comfort feeding because he doesn't take his usual 4oz. I think Prevacid has something to do with it.

I don't have any good answers, but I find this intriguing, since we've been wonderfing if Prevecid isn't the wrong drug for Noah. He's really not doing very well since the switch from Prilosec.

Our GI told said in his experience infants could become slightly constipated on Prevacid.

How did Noah do on the Prilosec? Any side effects to that? I'm just wondering since if I call my Ped that might be the next med he'll put my son on. I feel bad for the trial & error crap I have to put my son through. I guess that's why I want to give it another week. Just hope I can hold up with the sleep deprivation.

Hi

It is so hard to determine if your ds is having a side effect of the prevacid OR if he is experiencing reflux pain OR if the med dose is too low to work effectively
I switched my ds from zantac to prevacid when he was 5 mnths and it was 16 days of HELL...I kept blaming his symptoms on reflux...but after 16 days stopped the prevacid and started prilosec and he did much better

My dd was on pepcid and needed something stronger and I was very reluctant to try prevacid that the Gi rec
We tried the tabs for 2 days when she was about 3-4mnths old and she cried and cramped and didn't sleep at all
I stopped the prevacid on the 3rd day and again she was immed better....she is now on prilosec

From being around the reflux boards a while it does seem like lots of kids react to PPI's with gas/cramping...lower GI issues
BUT it also seems that some of the initial discomfort will resolve itself after the first few weeks on the meds

Good Luck, Kim

Our son had stomaches, gas, and was fussy while on prevacid, he didn't do this with prilosec.

I noticed some of the same things with Joshua when we first switched from Zantac to Prevacid. After some good advice from the wise mommies on this forum, I gave it a few more weeks and he settled down.

I think he was just so uncomfortable that he had a hard time with everything! Once the Prevacid kicked in, he was and continues to be a much happier kiddo!

Connor tried both Prevacid (two times) and Prilosec and had gastro issues with both so we went back to Zantac which worked ok but he started having problems again recently. We went to the GI a couple weeks ago and she put him on Nexium which seems to be helping him and no gastro issues. Unfortunatley sometimes you have to play with these meds to find the right one and it can be frustrating.

Bethany was never a champion sleeper to begin with (up every hour or so for the first 14 months of her life!). She was on Prevacid for quite some time and it caused lots of constipation. She was recently switched to Prilosec and we've noticed a huge change in her. I should also mention that she's also on a dairy/soy free diet, too, which coincided with the new 'scrip. I can't say for certain that it was totally the Prevacid causing problems...

The Prevacid solutabs do contain milk solids, which can exacerbate problems in kids with dairy allergies/intolerances.

Noah did well with the Prilosec to some extent, but his reflux is so up and down, its always hard to tell.

After the first two weeks on Prevacid (it needed time to "kick in" and she needed time to heal) Emma started sleeping through the night, (9 p.m to 7 a.m.).

It only lasted a month, and then other issues popped up - unrelated to reflux. (Emma has kidney issues). She hasn't slept through the night since. But, that's another story! :)

In our experience, Prevacid has only caused constipation. No sleep problems. It actually helped her sleep better.

Zac had runny, prevacid stinky, poops for a week or two, after that nothing that I'm aware of. ALTHOUGH he has had chronic constipation and is on meds to control this. I'm still not convinced that prevacid is not the cause.

Thanks for your insight everyone. We've decided to take her off the Prevacid. For the last couple of days she's been screaming in pain everytime she poops.

I think she has severe stomach pains when she goes to the bathroom...and I think it's the Prevacid. My doctor agrees to take her off of it. Can't wait for the Pediatric GI appointment. Maybe we can get some better guidance.

Have a good weekend,
Nicole
