View Full Version : No vomiting, could DD have DGE?
Sewtired 01-23-2006, 04:05 PM My 4 month old daughter does not vomit, but has silent reflux. She was on Zantac and then Pepcid (Pepcid originally helped, but now doesn't), so she is starting Prevacid--has only been 3 days. She does not vomit, but does not take the bottle well at all unless I dream feed. She is on Alimentum formula, which is horrid tasting, so I am not sure if she just has a problem with the taste and won't drink, or if she is just feeling full. Do you think she could have DGE without the vomiting? I am always so stressed when it is time to feed her, I just want some answers. We have been to a Ped GI for FTT, but now that I am reading some of the posts here, I think maybe DGE might be her problem. Is this something they grow out of, or is this a long term problem? I am afraid of Reglan. Sorry for all the questions, hope someone has some ideas!
Hopesfriend 01-23-2006, 06:49 PM If you have had an barrium swollow done they would have noticed a possible probem there. There is a more intensive test to show that. Unfortunatly there are so many reasons why you are going through what you are. It could be that her reflux is bothering her and she has not appitite too. How old is your DD? Since she is FTT DGE might be something the GI would want to explore. If you don't want to try reglan you can always try a very small dose of an antibiotic (I can't spell it and I know you GI will know what I am talking about). Since your little girl if FTT keep being a squeeky wheel until you have a course of action that works to keep her growing right.
an other thing you might want to talk with the GI about is changing her meds. some don't seem to do as well on Zantac as others. She may not being responding to the meds she's on.
Good luck on this roller coaster I pray you find a remedy quickly
Sue
Sewtired 01-23-2006, 09:48 PM We have not had a barium swallow. I hope to encourage our GI or Ped to order one. GI listed her FTT as resolved, but only because we were forcing the bottle on her. I know now that that is not a good thing to do, but we were desparate. I just want my baby to eat!
Leigh 01-23-2006, 09:53 PM My youngest is former FTT (started solids at the age of 14 months). He is a silent refluxer diagnosed at 14 months via a milk test which also identified his DGE. So, yes you can have DGE without the puking.
Iain is having his DGE addressed this Friday during his checkup. Prior to this he has had nothing given for DGE. He is on prevacid and zantac presently.
Sorry, I am so tired now so I will take a peek here again tomorrow.
karie 01-24-2006, 02:02 AM Sarah has DGE and she doesn't vomit that often. She also has no interest in her bottle. She only has one good feed a day- the 1pm feed- she actually appears hungry for this bottle but all other bottles nothing- no real signs of hunger. She is on erythromycin low dose for DGE and it worked fairly well although I think the effect is starting to wear off. we are going to try a new med soon. She had the gastric emptying scan to diagnose her DGE. We have also tried periactin as an appetite stimulant- it seems to work off and on.

ElisMom 01-24-2006, 12:29 PM I would get an emptying scan. That way you will know either way. Your child does not have to vomit because of it and the DGE may be what is causing the reflux. Best wishes and let us know what the docs say and if you decide to have the test done.
melba19 01-24-2006, 07:23 PM Yes it could be DGE with out the vomiting. If you have some concerns about this I would talk to your gi doc about having a gastric emptying scan. This test is one of the true test to be done to determine delayed gastric emptying. I do wish you luck and hope that you are able to get some answers.

Sewtired 01-24-2006, 09:16 PM Thanks for all the replies. I have talked to the GI drs. nurse, but the GI dr is suggesting a feeding therapist. I am not too sure about that. I think she "can" eat just fine, she just doesn't want to. We see her Ped tomorrow, so I am going to see if he will send us for one. It is so frustrating when she won't eat. We are also going to try a different formula to see if another would taste better--she is on alimentum, but we are not sure she has a milk protein problem. We are probably going to try a soy formula--again, I am going to run this by her ped first. (The GI doc told is to go ahead and try something different). I really would like to get the scan done and know something for sure.
Hopesfriend 01-25-2006, 10:32 PM A food therapist for a 4 mohth old? jWell alrighty then. I agree with you. A scan would be the best first step. have you tried nutramigin or neocate (formulas) yet? The neocate is usually order through the pharmasist but was the only formula that my DD could keep down. If you are not comfortable with the ped if he says no to the scan, find a new one. Trust your mommydar and unfortunatly some of us have had to be a broken squeeky, smelly, old wheel before we got results.
Good luck with the ped
Sue
Sewtired 01-26-2006, 12:49 PM Hi Sue,
Well, the ped would not order the scan either. He also thought it was way too soon for a feeding therapist. But he is all for us trying a different formula. We were currently taking Alimentum and I really think the taste might have been a factor. We are trying Enfamil Gentlease now. She has puked most of it, which is not something she generally does.:smt078 So I am not sure what to think about that. We tried with some cereal this morning, and she did keep it down. I did notice that the Alimentum was thicker anyway (we mix at 27 cal/oz).
ElisMom 01-26-2006, 08:15 PM If you really feel that it may be DGE, I would try to find someone who will do the scan just for your peace of mind. It could be whats making the reflux/vomiting worse.
