I am just wondering if this has happened to everyone. We started Jackson back on Zantac last Tuesday. He wasn't taking his bottles when I work (part time) but has always nursed like a champ. The first night he had the Zantac he slept from 10pm to 4am!! He is a 6 or more time night waker usually. The next day he took his bottle for my grandma who watches him while I work- no arching nothing. I was soo excited, he was soo much better. Then since then its been all downhill. We are back to waking 6+ times a night and back arching fits. Don't know about the bottles because I haven't worked since then. What's going on?? I am just so sad, especially since I saw him doing better for a whole two days ;(. I hate him puking and refluxing in pain.

Just wondered if this ever happened to anyone??

Hi

Mmmmmmm...I had both of kids on zantac and didn't have this experience
For us, zantac took a full 12-14 days to kick in (which is the norm)...so, my kids didn't improve at all from the first few doses
I was actually getting so fed up I was about to try something else, when it kicked in...
I would make sure your ds is on a strong dose..if after 12-14 days you don't see an improvement...I would see a GI (if u aren't already) about maxing the zantac dose, then I would move on to a PPI
From my past experience, reflux peaks from 4-7 mnths..give or take...so with teething and all it will get worse before it gets better
So, I think the proper meds are essential for you and baby!!

Good Luck, Kim

O.K. just got done answering your other post.

It's the constipation!!!! Constipation will make a baby reflux more often and most times their eating will suffer too, because they feel full.

Bethany has done this, too--we'll see marked improvement for a day or two and, just when I'm about to make a post on the "Good Days" forum, we slide back.

Her eating/sleeping tends to be worse when she's constipated. Could this also be Jackson's issue?

Don't give up on the Zantac just yet!! It's so frustrating, but sometimes the kids to backslide a bit. :banghead:

Hmm I guess I never thought it could have been the constipation. When I picked his medicine up at Walgreens I asked the pharmacist how long does it usually take before it kicks in?? He told me probably 4 or 5 days but it should give him relief right away. I have heard you need 2 weeks to be able to tell too.

Anyway I just thought it was weird he slept so good and took his bottle so well the first 2 days. We do need to get him to poop though. He isn't pooping little hard pieces or anything yet, but I guess that doesn't mean it isn't bothering him either. I guess we will see what the pedi says to do for his constipation.

Kim- from what I know he is on a pretty good dose. I guess I need to give it another week before we decide for sure. We did a 3 week trial when he was probably 2 months and it didn't help but then the pedi rubbed it off as colic so we haven't done anything until now.

Minnie- Thanks so much for you advice on the other thread. I am curious to as what the pedi will want us to do. I know with being constipated and teething it's making his reflux worse. I just hate seeing him in pain- you know how that goes.

Thanks girls!

 Ok, we experienced kind of the same thing with Jackson. The first day after he was on Zantac he was a different baby. I thought that maybe I was crazy, but he probably felt so terrible that the Zantac helped a little at first. I agree with the other ladies, constipation. We have never had this problem (well I take that back, one time and I did Barley cereal for one feed and it worked like a charm) Maalox or Mylanta will get his stool going. It does for my Jackson. Ask your dr. or ped. for dosage. I use the Maalox max in Cherry flavor, he weighs 15 pounds. and I do 2 ml. as needed, no more than 4 times a day.
Poor baby, give it some time for the med. we are on med. and have been since November and have days when he is MISERABLE :banghead: and then days when he is FABULOUS:smt041 it's the roller coaster!
Big hugs to you and Jackson (love his name by the way!)

Eric got relief right away too, but in about 4 days the constipation kicked in. We kept it at bay with karo suryp for about 10 days and then it was time for another med increase, and here comes the constipation again... sigh

But yeah I thought I was nutso thinking how well he was doing so quickly. It was amazing. I felt like I was getting to know my "real" baby for the first time.

He finally pooped!! I didn't even give the enulose yet. I am wondering if I even should?? I am afraid if I don't he will go back to being constipated again. Hmmm, I better that way we can make sure we are giving the Zanatac a chance to work.

We had an okay night when he FINALLY went to bed. Was still up but not 8 times. I did spit up like 5 times in an hour last night :( poor guy. I just hope tonight he goes to sleep before midnight since I have to work tomorrow and be up at 4:30am :banghead: .

I am sorry didn't catch your name, but we think Jackson is an okay name too. What is your Jackson's middle name?? Ours is Jackson James. Do you call him Jack? I really don't some family here call him JJ. Who knows!

My name is Emily, Jackson's middle name is Christopher (after his daddy) My intentions in the beginning were to call him Jack, I don't know , we'll have to wait and see!

Is Jackson puking still? I believe Zantac only reduces the acid in the stomach. It may take a while for the esophugus to heal - call the Dr.

Zantac syrup worked initially for us, but then our son had terrible abdominal pains and wouldn't nurse or sleep. (Not to mention it is a terrible peppermint flavor). We switched to the effervescent formula (no taste/no alchohol), that helped the sleeping - he wasn't wired during the day, but the gas/abdominal pains continued (which also caused him to wake up).

Do you think it is the acid reflux or refered pain from gas?

We are now on prevacid (for 1 month now) & it is working well. Carter is now sleeping 4-7 hours at a time in the evening.

Carter's mommy - 4 mos old silent reflux.

Glad to hear he pooped! I would wait on the enulose if he did it on his own. Was it dry, pelleted, soupy, icky yucky? Yeah, I am asking for a description of poop.:smt047 It can be very telling. How long since his last poop?

Minnie is right. Constipation makes reflux WAY WORSE.
