We seem to be in a cycle here of finally poop then get constipated again. His pedi said to give him up to 4 oz of apple prune juice a day. I usually give him 2 oz in his sippy cup and then mix it in with his food too.

I am not giving him bananas, rice cereal or applesauce. All of which I were told could constipate him. I also try to feed him peaches and pears (when he will eat). Anyway, we are now on day 3 of no poop and he used to be an every day kind of guy!

I am just afraid the apple/prune juice use to work like a charm but seems to be not doing the trick anymore.

I am waiting for his pedi to call me back. I had to call them this morning to update them. Just wondering if anyone had any other ideas??

Thank you!

Karo suryp, juices, prunes, avoiding BRAT foods etc etc didn't help Eric with his constipation.
Karo worked in the beginning, but only a little. it would make his pooh soft enough to where it didn't hurt him as much to pass it, but they were still rather loafy and scarce. He drank enough karo that I should have bought stock in the company! It just couldn't have been good for him, but that's what all the docs kept saying to do, so I did it. Now I know about botulism and the diabetes risks and it makes me mad that they let him drink so much for so long (1oz in every bottle for 5 months And he only drank 2 or 3 oz at a time. WHAT WAS I THINKING!?).

The only thing that worked and kept him regular was to take him off his zantac periodically. Well as you know that wasn't fun and I only did it when I got desperate cause it would take at least 4 or 5 days before it helped him go, and within one missed dose of zantac he was miserable with heart burn.

Finally the GI gave us lactulose. I cannot say enough about this stuff. He pooped 3 to 4 times a day and it was normal and not painful for him. It truly was life changing for us, and he even started to eat. Plus he could take his max dose of zantac 3 times a day without problems! FINALLY!:D

Now I can only give him his correct dose every other day, because I weaned him off his meds and had to put him back on zantac and no poop medicine anymore cause we didn't need it for sooo long.

I can't wait till we see the doc on WEDS!!!!

Ooops sorry I rambled! LOL

Excuse me

Anyway,
I don't know how long you have been struggling with this, but it's so important to keep these guys regular. If this has been happening for a while and diet and all doesn't help, then talk to your pedi or GI and see if there is something they can give to help him out. Nothing will get a refluxers mouth to seal up tighter than constipation, and that's the last thing you want.

Good Luck
and (((((HEALTHY POOP VIBES))))) to you

Bethany takes MiraLax, which works really, really well (it's a powder that you dissolve in liquid or baby food. Tasteless and dissolves really easily). She was on Enulose (Lactulose) for a time and we still take it as needed; however, she, like many kids who are on it, got really, really gassy.

In the meantime, we still sometimes have to give suppositories when the constipation rears its ugly head (usually in response to foods she doesn't tolerate well, like dairy and soy).

Milk of Magnesia is also sometimes used to help soften stools; however, once a baby is constipated, I'm not sure how well it works. (We used it for a short while as a preventive measure; however, it didn't work well for us. Others have said they had good luck with it, though.)

I know that some people still use the Karo remedy. Our ped. didn't recommend it b/c he feels it's too much sugar for a baby. That being said, I know that many people have had good luck using this method. (Different strokes for different folks!)

We battled constipation for 5 months. We, like Bethany, are using Miralax and it works great!
Before the Miralax we were using enulose but Zac was SO crampy and gassy w/that.
I dont know how old Jackson is, as that can determine how much water/juice you should be giving if he is under 6 months (I think).
We did one teaspoon of light karo syrup (as recommended by ped.) for each ounce of water. IF he's under 4 or so months she specifically said NO MORE than one ounce a day. Anyhow...that didn't do too much good. The best NATURAL way for us was mineral oil. The mineral oil did help. I think he took one tsp. at lunch and one tsp. at dinner. We were doing the same thing though, having really good poops and then back to constipation. Now, w/the miralax (in general) he is pooping on his own now for over a month! Yay for that!
Good luck

Daniel also ended up on Miralax after juice and diet changes didn't work and Enulose created a constipation/diarrhea cycle that drove me nuts.

I guess we were lucky in that a formula change really helped with the constipation for Matthew (we were have blood in his stools from the straining). Also, we gave him apple puree on a spoon and this worked well too (along with prune juice).

I add 1 ounce prune puree to each of Noah's morning bottles, and that almost always does the trick. That apple/prune juice didn't work as well for us, either. Warning-PRUNE DIAPERS ARE THE WORST!!!

The pedi called back and wants him to try Enulose once a day. I know some of you said it caused terrible gas. He can be quite the little tooter, so I will watch for that. I hope we don't end up in the constipation/diarrhea cycle either.

Thanks for the warning Maggie, with all the prune juice he has had the last few days I am sure we are in for it when the explosions come!! yuck lol

I am off to bed it's nearly 1 am and Jackson was up until just an hour ago. You can read our wonderful sleep woes if you are curious.

When zac was FIRST on the enulose he had massive diaper explosions which slowly tapered off back to constipation. But beware, if it's anything like Zac's experience....we're talking out the sides, down inside the carseat, all over the floor, all over FP rocking chair...all over my face (LONG STORY) LOL...that was a post I made in October.

Ok, I posted to your other one, read it too, but my dr. suggested Barley cereal and this worked like a charm. If you remember the BRAT diet, rice is very binding, as is applesauce and bananas. BRAT (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast)
Hope he gets better soon

Just wanted to say Eric had really bad gas on it too, but only while his body adjusted to it. By about a week the gas cramping subsided. He seemed to handle it O.K. I was just glad he was finally popping on his own and was able to take his heart burn meds without problems.

Lots of great advice here already. I just wanted to add that you should probably take him off the apple prune juice as the apple part may be a problem. Some kiddos do get bound with it and others get the scoots.

Just keep track of the BMs and do not get reliant on something to make him poop as you may regret it in the long run as it takes forever to get them to go normally. I have battled chernobyl diapers and poop here with my middle son for over 2 years now and it is NOT pretty.

Keep us posted on the poop!:iconbigg:
