What products should we be cutting out of our diet if our child has reflux?
I have heard dairy, wheat, soy, eggs, nuts..
I am a vegetarian, breastfeeding my child and usually eat soy burgers and eggs for protein. Should I stop eating them?? If so, what do you all eat if you take all of these things out of your diet??

That's a tough one--different kids react to different foods. :banghead: Typically dairy, soy, wheat and citrus are common triggers...Are you working with a GI or does your ped. have a good understanding of GERD? If so, you might also talk to one of them about this--they may advise you to try an elimination diet or keep a diary of foods you eat/your baby's reactions (BMs, reflux episodes, etc.) to help pinpoint what's going on.

Good luck!

Milk and soy are the most common, I would start w/ those. The top sticky has the dairy/soy ingredient list to avoid.

I STRONGLY suggest you visit THIS link aswell
kellymom.com :: Can a nursing mother eat this food? (http://www.kellymom.com/nutrition/mom/mom-foods.html)
...its different from the other one, but same host. I deprived myself of so many different foods in the begining...only to find out later that I could eat what I wanted and it did not effect Zac any differently. Then again, that doesn't mean that every mom can eat whatever she wants w/no reactions. Just check out the link minnie gave you and this one aswell...that should have a few answers for you, more than I can answer at least. :dontknow: sorry

That link has to do w/ the notions that nursing moms have to limit their intake of certain foods b/c it will effect the baby. Unless baby is sensitized to soemthing you're eating, it's true, you can eat whatever you want. This is NOT the case for allergic babies, what you eat will effect them.

exactly, that is why I said that does not mean that every mom can eat whatever she wants

It is a question of whether or not the child has an allergy or intolerance to foods the Mother ingests (and the difference can be hard to figure out sometimes).

I believe that the member posting the question was more or less wondering about reflux inducing foods and how to avoid them rather than worrying about allergic reactions. For instance, some kids reflux like mad when given juice, others when given chocolate, etc. Is that the question? If so, I am not familiar at all with vegetarian diets and I am wondering if it would cause reflux at all as BF is the best and most easily digested food already for your baby. Obvious problem food like coffee and spicy things may cause increased reflux in your baby, but I am not really sure. I know my middle son reacted when I ate spicey and I did not know at the time he had GERD.

Probably the elimination diet would be the best to really focus in on any problem foods, same as figuring out allergies and intolerances. I am really not sure how you would go about it being a vegetarian, though. Perhaps someone else can be of assistance?

This is taken directly from this website under Feeding/Nutrition:

http://www.infantrefluxdisease.com/breastfeeding_reflux.php

It states that:

Eliminating milk products and even some of the other foods* known to irritate reflux can benefit some breastfed refluxers.
*fried or creamy style vegetables, tomatoes, citrus: such as oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, anything prepared with whole milk or high-fat, cold cuts, sausage, bacon, fatty meat, chicken fat/skin, all animal or vegetable oils, chocolate, carbonated beverages, chicken, beef, milk, or cream-based soups

Hope this helps. :)

thanks for the help. i wanted to know foods that might be making the reflux worse, not necessarilly allergens.
my docs have basically said the dairy and egg. will have to starve for awhile i guess! hehe. just kidding, i will find other things to make. i got some spirulina supplements yesterday so going to see how they work in regards to refluxing.

I do recall reading somewhere that, for example, if you were to eat something citrus or carbonated...it will not effect your baby's reflux because the breastmilk is not produced directly from the mother's stomache's intake...it is produced through the mother's bloodstream. So basically the citric stuff may cause you to have heartburn, persay...but not neccessarily the baby... I hope that makes sense as I cannot recall where I read so have nothing to quote.

Okay, I found something here...
"

However, breastmilk is made from what passes into mom's blood, not what is in her stomach or digestive track. This is not saying that your baby will not have a sensitivity to a certain food (http://www.kellymom.com/babyconcerns/food-sensitivity.html). "
