My son is back on Prilosec as I could not get him ti swallow and keep down the nasty Zegerid. I give it to him 2x/day (15mg total)mixed in a small baby spoon full of fruit puree. Unfortunately, he gags on and spits out the little beads so I have to keep picking them off of his bib and sticking them back in his mouth. The only way I can get him to swallow them is by immediately sticking the bottle in his mouth. repeatedly. I know the PPI's are supposed to be given an hour before eating, but the best I can do is give them along with his bottle. When I ask his GI about it she says "just do the best you can". My question is whether or not the Prilosec is going to work for him by giving it that way? I don't know how else to give him Prilosec...the unflavored liquid was a horror show. Have any of you had this problem? Was the Prilosec or other PPI effective for your child even given with some food?

Catherine has always been dosed by the clock. At one point when she was very young, she was getting 16 doses a day of various meds. Since she's always been a demand feeder, there was no way to time the meds with the feeds. The only way to keep the dosing straight was to go strictly by the clock. It works well enough for her.

Yes, it's still going to work, but maybe not as effectively? We saw a change in symptoms when we started giving Ian his prevacid 30 min before breakfast, as opposed to 2 hours after breakfast. Maybe someone with more experience will pipe up.

By the way, he has been on Prilosec for about 3-4 weeks now and we really haven't seen improvement yet, although, he did have two feeds that took less than 40 minutes while he was awake today!!! They usually take 2 hours unless he sleep feeds. It gives me hope :-)

Ok, we are only able to give the prilosec to Matthew with his meals.. not the best but it still works/ is effective for us........
Maya really couldn't handle the Prilosec the liquid would make her vomit and she would gag and spit out the beads. She takes the Prevacid solutab really well which was what we requested from the GI following the recommendations we received from this board.
I'm not sure...I would assume that just getting the Prilosec into Asher's system (even if it is with food) would be better than not at all; however, I'm not a doctor.
I will say that before we were given correct dosing information for Prevacid when it was first prescribed for Bethany, we didn't see much improvement. :-( When I started giving it on an empty stomach, I began to see results.
Two thoughts:
1.) Bethany was on Prevacid solutabs (taken off b/c she has MSPI and the tabs have trace amts of milk solids as a filler). They dissolve very quickly on the tongue (even for babies!) and taste good. Same class of meds as the Prilosec. I wonder if this would be an option for Asher...?
2.) Now she's on Prilosec and we have it compounded and flavored. No beads, tastes okay...maybe your doc knows of a pharmacy that does compounds and would okay this for Asher...?
{{{BIG HUGS}}} This medication business can drive you crazy!!
If Mag eats too soon after taking her prevacid she'll get sick causing a domino affect for the rest of the day.
