View Full Version : Does constipation make Reflux worse? ConnorsMommy 01-21-2006, 09:59 PM Has anyone heard that Constipation makes Reflux worse? Just wondering if this was true. Becky in NM 01-21-2006, 10:32 PM Yes, I think it does. If nothing's coming out the back end, then, in Daniel's case, things are more likely to come back up. Constipation really affects his willingness to "eat," too. Mary 01-22-2006, 12:21 PM Same with Bethany--when she's constipated, she strains more, which leads to more refluxing (and some puking--she's otherwise a silent refluxer). We also notice a huge difference in eating. When she's constipated, she feels full (and uncomfortable, too!) and will not eat at all. Leigh 01-22-2006, 12:44 PM 100% absolutely true. As the others said, if they are backed up reflux gets worse. Our GIs (two of them) and one ped have said the same thing. It is important to have your little refluxer "regular". zapsmom 01-22-2006, 01:03 PM Yes, it does. Our feeding specialist has told us this as well with zoee when she was constipated. EmmasMommy 01-22-2006, 01:19 PM Definitely. I saw a huge correlation between Emma's intake when she was constipated, and now that she goes regularly (with the aid of Milk of Magnesia) she drinks significantly more. Solids, on the other hand, is another story. She eats very little whether she's constipated or not. sixdogssixcats 01-22-2006, 02:25 PM Definitely a connection. For Catherine, if it can't go out one end, it comes out more the other! Minnie 01-22-2006, 02:57 PM YES!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH! and the heart burn meds can cause constipation too. You just honestly don't even want me to get started on this subject, cus my post would become a novel. Actually I think I still might have a copy of the 3 page letter I faxed to Eric peds about it, not that you're interested LOL OwensMom 01-22-2006, 03:45 PM Definitly, when Owen's constipation was at it's worse he was refluxing like crazy and spitting up more too. Leigh 01-22-2006, 05:40 PM YES!!!!! AHHHHHHHHHH! and the heart burn meds can cause constipation too. You just honestly don't even want me to get started on this subject, cus my post would become a novel. Actually I think I still might have a copy of the 3 page letter I faxed to Eric peds about it, not that you're interested LOL LOL! Minnie, you are so funny. I bet the ped was thrilled with the letter... Wonder if he kept the copy?!:smt043 Minnie 01-22-2006, 06:04 PM Leigh, as far as I know it's still in his medical record. And HEY that fax got Eric an appointment with a GI ASAP! I think we only waited 4 days. That pedi office HAD to get rid of me somehow. This was their out and they took it! LOL Leigh 01-22-2006, 09:53 PM Hey, whatever works! Maybe you SHOULD post your letter so that we can see what it takes to get a GI appointment in 4 days! I bow in the presence of your greatness.:iconbigg: Noah's Mom 01-22-2006, 10:23 PM POST THE LETTER MINNIE! Yes, Noah's reflux and general discomfort worsens when he is constipated. After the blow-out, he will almost immediately take a good bottle. poegirl30 01-24-2006, 09:16 AM You know I have wondered this too! It seems that when Cypress hasn't gone all day, he is more fussy and doesn't eat well. As soon as he "blowsout" he is a happy baby and ready to eat! AvasMommy 07-04-2006, 08:27 PM Sorry guys, I know this was a really old thread, but I just found it. I had been wondering the same thing. Ava's never been "regular" and always seems to really struggle to poop. I make sure that she eats lots of veggies and fruit for fiber, but should they be taking any sort of fiber supplement, since it is so important for them to stay regular? Is there one for little ones? Juice is too acidic for her, she won't touch it (I had heard that pear juice had a laxative effect), but she does love a jar of prunes swirled thru some oats or cream of wheat, but sometimes its not enough. Any thoughts? Minnie 07-04-2006, 09:50 PM I'm in the same boat as far as the juice thing, and trying to get lot's of good stuff in his diet. Sometimes it's NOT enough, but I tried fiber supplements and they made his reflux flare. I think that it's because it was insoluble fiber and reflux kids need the soluble fiber for it to work for them. (too much fiber can make reflux worse) Fiber found in food is definitely better, and more easily digested. Not sure what to tell ya. It's one of those MANY catch 22s when it comes to GER/GERD constipation= reflux flare Fiber = better poop + reflux flare Lactulose (an RX stool softener) helped us get through a really rough constipation cycle. Maybe it would help your little one too. Now I just try to stay away from all the foods that constipate or limit them, and make sure he gets all his fruits and veggies. He still has problems now and then but his constipation only lasts for a few days now, and I can usually turn it around with some of the "right" foods. AvasMommy 07-04-2006, 09:55 PM Thanx Minnie, it's such a catch-22 and a vicious cycle. So unfair for them! We see the ped in the beginning of August, I'll ask about the Lactulose for our bad times. It's either liquid poop or charcoal brickettes, no in-between for us, and it seems to be a struggle for her either way. Thanks for responding to me! marta 07-05-2006, 07:46 AM My daughter ate some puree carots yesterday and today she had this carrots in her stool. What does it mean? She cant tolerate or digest her? Anyone have any idea? |
