Help!!
Any ideas on how to help with her constant leaking??
We have seen the g-tube clinic with no answers. They tried a shorter button and that didn't help. She leaks constantly! We have a sponge pad around it to try and soak it up and she leaks through it ans soaks her outfit. It doesn't seem to matter if she is on the pump or off, she leaks anyway. We have tried putting more water in the balloon with no luck, plus they don't want more than 5cc's in it because her stomach is so small and we are already dealing with retching. We have had as much as 9cc's in it before they told us not to do that.
Thhis past week they thought it was because of the granulation tissue but we got that cleared and it actually leaks worse now.
She is 10months old about 15 lbs and has a 14french, 1cm mic-key button.

We see them again on Wednesday but wanted to ask the veterans if they had any ideas.
Thanks!!

We've been very lucky that Daniel never leaked except for right after his G tube was placed. He has a Genie button, which is pretty cool in my opinion. (There's a photo at http://gerdlingmoms.org/becky_blog/?blog=1&page=1&disp=posts&paged=3, but it's not very close up.)

How long has she had her G tube?

Hope the GI or someone else here is more help!

I e-mailed Roni, I am sure she may have some ideas. I know Shae-Lynne leaked a lot when she was younger. At one point when she was leaking bad it meant that the button had to be changed.

There is something on that page that may help.

Best wishes

Hi,

Becky- Wow Daniel looks so grown up in the new pics. I am so happy he is doing good. No more speech therapy is a great thing!!
So is your button made by Bard? I tried looking it up and that is all I could find, but with no pics.
Is it easy to get in and out?
Thank you so much!!

Jean-Thanks for the info. We know it doesn't need to be replaced yet, she just had one break on thursday and it leaked right away. Hannah has had a strange problem with mic-key buttons. They keep breaking no matter what we do.Since her surgery she has been through a ton(9 I think) That is with the as little as 4 cc's of water and up to 9cc's to try to stop the leak. They are baffled right now.

She had the surgery on Nov 2 2005 and we have had nothing but problems since she got it. We saw the surgeon in the E.R on Thursday after the last break and leak. They didn't have any ideas then. They want us in this week and I would like to have some info with me when we go. They had talked about a bard button earlier because of all the breaks but they wanted to wait a while for full healing. It kind of freaks me out because the home health nurse talked about the pain when they come out, but the leaking is really bad too.Catch 22! I can handle a little leaking but she soaks outfits. She is also having slow weight gain because so much leaks out.

Thank you so much!! If you have any other ideas let me know!

Hi

We have been going thru the same thing with Jaxon's G tube... Back and forth to the surgeon with no luck, it will not stop leaking..... We to have to put all kinds of padding under the tube but it still leaks thru the clothing.... Jaxon is losing weight whick I'm sure is from the leakage... The drs too are baffled as to why it is leaking so much... He has a 14 fr they will be putting the mic -key in next wednesday to see if this will help with the leakage... Not sure it will, I'm worried it is not healed enough to put it in yet.. Jaxon's was done Dec 23/05.. Sorry I couldn't be of any help but wanted you to know I sympathize with you...

I was wondering if your gtube clinic has mentioned about using another button. There are other types of buttons out there that are smaller than the mckey button. I do hope that they are able to find you some answers soon and help you out.

You know I know that the younger the child and more active they are crawling, walking, ect it cqn make the tube leak more. Noah's leaks all of the time always has. We finally just caved in and we put a split gauze on it and he wear an undershirt under his clithes all of the time.

Hi again,
We are supposed to see the surgeons on Wednesday. Hopefully they can figure something out. Her button leaks even when she is sleeping. It also leaks through gauze and the sponges they gave us before to try to help. We have changed 3 outfits today already. Her whole front was soaked while she was taking a nap(on her back)
I think they will probably change the type of button since this type hasn't worked for us at all.

I guess the genie is made by bard, since the decompression tubing we use is. We don't change the button ourselves, but it appears to be pretty simple. It's done every three months by the GI, and he just clamps the tubing behind the button, opens a piece that goes around the button, and pulls out the button. Then he pops a new one into the tubing and secures it with a new surrounding piece. Daniel is fascinated by the process. It doesn't hurt him at all. He just sits on my lap and I hold up his shirt.

But I have no idea if he doesn't leak because of his button type. He didn't get his button until he'd had his G tube for about six weeks, and it only leaked for the first two weeks or so. Maybe we just got lucky.

And, yes, he is a really big boy now. My MIL made him a "nap mat," which looks a lot like a little sleeping bag. And he loves to lie in it while I read to him. So of course I keep picturing him camping with the boy scouts!
