As I am currently moving Maya on to solids I was thinking of what meats to inlcude in Maya's diet at around 6-7 months. I had read somewhere that an infant who is MSPI should avoid beef as there maybe some cross reactivity to this due to the fact that this is the source of the dairy proteins. Has anyone else heard this or do this? I would be interested to hear what other people think.

I don't know about all that, but both my kids didn't have meat until after their 1rst Birthday. It's just the way I do it.

O.K. this post was no help at all LOL
Sorry I'm still going to hit the submit button!

I've heard the same thing, but AJ never had a problem w/ beef. Meat is a pretty large protein and generally not reccomended till 9 mos+ b/c of it. Especially if you have MSPI issues and have reflux meds, their stomach just may not be ready for all that even at 9 mos. I never gave the boys meat till they could eat it off my plate. I think Evan had a few tiny roast beef pieces once before stopping all his solids.

Emma refuses meat, and the jarred meat smells like cat food. :pukerigh:

Anyway, I'm not pushing meat until she's ready. Em gets plenty of iron from her formula; and after her iron levels are checked, at one year, I will introduce it, if needed.

MSPI kids have trouble digesting meats, according to our ped, so he told us to offer it if she likes it, (NOPE!), but don't push it.

Catherine has never had meat. I don't see any need to give it to her at this point.

My son started on meat at around 7 months, and the pureed meals I made myself of meat potatoes and veg where his favourite. Maybe though I should hold back with it for Maya it just seems that meals of just vegetables and fruit purees are so boring. Also because she doesn't drink much formula I'm worried about her getting enough protein in her diet, maybe I'll ask the dietician. Do you think fish would be better tolerated than meat?

Sarah--Honestly, I'm not sure whether fish proteins are more easily tolerated than beef proteins. Do you have a nutritionist you can consult with on this question?

I don't know much about that and would hate to give you incorrect information.

Do let us know what you find out!

Your question about the meat protein is really interesting, never came across that before. Please do let us know what you find out! We started meats (just beef so far) kind of early (6 months) at the recommendation of the GI doc. But I wonder if that was the right move? So far Samantha is tolerating her meals really well (and she really likes the beef/rice/squash porridge that I make her)...but I hope I'm not messing up her insides? Should I stop the meat porridges and just go back to cooking her veggies and rice in beef broth?

I think I read that fish was something to start much later than beef. The order that my ped recommended was lamb, chicken, beef. (we never tried the lamb or chicken). But let us know if fish is good to try!

NO FISH. Sorry, that was a bit PUSHY. LoL...seriously though, I've read, and heard from many people (including an amazing ped) that you should NOT introduce fish until at least after their first birthday. If I recall correctly, it has to do w/it being a common allergen (if that is a word). I guess meaning that the possibility of a allergy is much higher w/fish, aswell as egg whites, etc etc.
About the meat, i would hold off, giving her circumstances. There are pleanty of "yummy" pureed veggie mixes that they've got out. INcluding ones with beans (lots of protien). You can make your own as well. Anyhoo, Zac started meat at 7 months I think. But he doesn't have any other "issues" that we're aware of besides reflux and stool holding. He seems to tolerate all foods well thus far. We give him a veggie/meat jarred dinner at lunch and dinner AND he eats ground turkey or chicken as finger food w/maccaroni or cut up veggies on top of that, plus his fruit.

My GI said when Noah can tolerate fruits, I can move to veggies, and when he can tolerate veggies, I can move to meats no earlier than 10 months. Still in phase 1 hear at 9 months. Sara is right about fish. Steer clear for now.

Oh yeah, that's what Zac's ped said also...but it was reversed: Go through all the veggies, then all the fruits (although I dont think it makes a difference.) THEN introduce meats.
