View Full Version : Green poop?
poegirl30 01-20-2006, 01:37 PM My three month old baby is completely BF. He usually poops (mustard color) once a day, and it is usually a blow out. Yesterday, he pooped twice, and it had greenish flecks in it. He was really fussy yesterday, so I am not sure if it was just a virus or something else. Any ideas?
AndrewsMommy 01-20-2006, 01:41 PM Not quite sure on that... But I don't think just because they are breastfed, that their poo can't change color.
When I breastfed Andrew, I think his were all different, but he did and still never has a solid BM.
Have you given cereal yet?
My dd is still b'fed at 14 months and I remember her poops early on ranging from mustard colored and "seedy" to a weird army green color. I don't think it's anything to worry about; however, I'll see if I can find some "official" info on that.
:-)
poegirl30 01-20-2006, 01:53 PM No cereal yet. Our ped. GI was pleased with his weight gain and didn't want to "rock the boat." To be honest, I am dreading starting foods, because he didn't tolerate the fortifiers at all. It made his vomiting much worse.
AndrewsMommy 01-20-2006, 01:56 PM I would say you have nothing to worry about now. Sometimes it makes it easier for them when you start adding cereal to their formula/breastmilk. The thickness helps, but doesn't work for every baby. Andrew always threw up no matter how thick things were for him.
Good Luck to you, I hope you get it all figured out
Hmmm...a few questions while I'm finding some info.
Is he continuing to have green BMs today? Do they smell differently (worse) than his normal BMs? Are they totally green or just green flecks? Is the BM a different consistency than usual (slimy, firm, etc.)?
:-)
poegirl30 01-20-2006, 02:27 PM He hasn't had a BM today yet. Usually he has one later in the evening or at night. Last night, his were normal consistency though, with just green flecks in it.
AllieandJacksProudMama 01-20-2006, 02:41 PM I had this same issue with Allie when I was BF'ing. I read that green poo means that the baby is not getting enough hindmilk, and instead is getting all of the foremilk that has a lot of lactose in it. Usually, this will make babies more gassy as well. The remedy for this is to nurse on one breast at each feeding - this will completely empty the breast and ensure that baby gets the fatty hindmilk. So, only nurse on one side for the entire time and then the next time, nurse on the other side for the entire time. I used a safety pin on my bra strap to remember which one was next.
HTH!

alitressa 01-20-2006, 04:04 PM I agree with Christyn. My daughter and I had this problem when she was about 5 months old. She was exclusively breastfeed at the time and tended to nurse for long periods which appeared to cause the imbalance in my breastmilk. She was fussy, pulled off the breast often, sometimes gassy and had seedy stools that later became foul, green and at times slimy. Foremilk has lots of lactose which if the baby drinks in excess causes gassiness. That and the lack of fat from not getting enough hindmilk causes the werid stools. Nursing from one breast per feeding like Chistyn said is the remedy.
Leigh 01-20-2006, 11:21 PM I had that happen with Curran when I was BF too.

sarahh 01-21-2006, 12:12 AM Green poop is normal.. even for some breastfed babies. I was also told green poop is an indication of wind....
poegirl30 01-22-2006, 08:20 PM Thanks. He has gone back to his normal mustardy poops again.
sarahh 01-23-2006, 03:11 PM Glad to hear that!! :-D
Leigh 01-23-2006, 08:07 PM Terrific!
I counted my lucky stars that Curran used to produce mainly BF poops even though I supplemented with formula. I really LOVED those poops as they are so much better to deal with.
Glad to hear things are back to normal.:iconbigg:
