Hi- I'm hoping someone knows what this means- our baby girl has reflux- diagnosed at close to 2 months- she started off with zantac then prevacid. We've seena pedatrician GI who upped her prevacid to 2.5ml twice a day (compound). Before this, or pediatrician had upped it to 3ml - somewhere around this time frame, our gal (now 3 months) has been scratching her face and ears, sometimes thrashing her head from side to side- is this a headache? Is tha t aside effect from prevacid? If not, what could it be? She was checked for an ear infection and was told that it was not it.
Please help!!!

Carter never experienced that with prevacid but he is now teething and is making the same motions ... could your little gal be teething??

Catherine used to claw at her face and ears. She still does dig in her ears until she draws blood. Her ears are always clear of infection. I think it's a stress-relieving habit for her, like hair-twirling or knuckle-cracking.

It sounds like a headache to me, but it could be from other things. Teething can make the sinuses sore and cause a headache--does she have any other signs of teething? Drooling? My son started at 3 months and had 2 teeth by 5 months. When I started prevacid, it gave me a HUGE headache. It may go away after her body adjusts to the medication...maybe for the next few days, you could give her tylenol when you see her do that and then stop after like 3 days to see if it has stopped. If not, and no other teething signs are present, I would assume it is the prevacid.

I asked the pediatrician if she was about a week ago and she has the whitening of the gums on the bottom and he was surprised- but then he felt the area and could not feel the teeth coming close..
is it safe to give tylenol to a baby this age? i am all for it since she does seem very uncomfortable.. she is drooling more and more if that helps as a symptom..
thank you

Yes, you can give tylenol at this age. Dosage is based on weight, so please call your dr's office and get the correct dosage. I always keep the kids' weight and current dosage amounts on a white board on my fridge. It sure beats waking the nurse up at all hours of the night to get the right figures for cold medicines, etc.
I'm wondering about the teething thing, too. Ian drooled incessantly from about 6 weeks. Sure enough, by 5 months or so he had several teeth. Already, at 15 months, he has 14! Waaaaay more than my other kids at the same age. Go figure.

Hi, Jackson moves his head from side to side all the time while he is sleeping. I posted a thread a while back about this, I asked how many experienced it, and lots of us have, it seems like maybe it is happening when they are refluxing. The scratching, he also does, he rubs (or scratches) his head to soothe himself to sleep.
He has been on Prevacid for a week now and we haven't seen any bad side effects. He started moving his head like that before the Prevacid.

I used to really worry about Matthew... he would scratch his face and claw at his throat... my doctor told me it was due to the reflux. He also HATED us touching his head.. trying to dry his hair after a bath was a nightmare when he was little... I used to give him panadol (tylenol) as I thought he had a headache but of course noone really knows if little babies get headaches *sigh* The scratching at himself etc has all gone now.
The moving from side to side I think is common in babies... Stephen wore a very nice bald spot- he looked like a bald eagle!!!!
