View Full Version : Is DGE harmful in the long run?

We went back and forth with the surgeon about "fixing" Molly's DGE when he did her fundo. Ultimately, he decided that she was "fine" and did not mess with it. Here's the rub, he said when he looked at her films (Upper GI's only, we have never had an emptying scan) that she DID NOT have DGE, but pre-fundo she would throw undigested food up all the time. Food that she had eaten 24-36 hours earlier. So what he has experienced from seeing two films and what i have experienced from living with her for 6 years are very different. Now that she CAN'T throw up, what are the ramifications of DGE? She barely eats at all, 2 months post-op we are still on a liquid and very soft diet. That probably makes a difference in emptying as well, the solids are what we always got back. Will having that food sitting in her tum and not being able to evacuate it cause damage? (We do assume that she will be able to eat normally again!) The GI still has her on 40mg of Nexium and 80mg of Reglan and will leave her on them for another 5 months to help with healing.

If you are feeling that there is still a problem with the emptying I would request that your dd have a gastric emptying study done now to see where excatly is with emptying. My son has severe dge and has had even prior to surgery and is presently on motility drugs that really dont help. I wish I had answers to your questions but we are living with it everyday still.

Finally if they did the study and saw a huge delay the doc still would be able to help try and fix the delay. The surgery that is done is a pyloroplasty or a plyoromatomy(sp), I do know a few kids that have had this done and has really helped. I also know kids that have had it done and have had no relief. I was also wondering if your dd had a gtube placed with her fundo?

I think a fundo can sometimes make DGE worse. tha's why sometimes they will do both fundo and pyloroplasty. My GI said that if the DGE isn't improved by 2 years of agee then they recommend the pyloroplasty.

The fundo can make DGE alot worse. The food can't come up or go down. So, it sits and cause all kinds of problems and stomach pain. Are you saying they did the fundo without an emptying scan first? Because that is a big no no! If she is having problems with emptying you think, stomach pain and no hunger would be good indicators, I would push for a scan, With having the fundo it makes it a bigger concern.
