Hi all,
My 2 month-old daughter was diagnosed with silent reflux about 3 weeks ago. We started with Maalox. It worked for a few days (she was sleeping MUCH better) and then seemed to relapse. She started waking up very often again and screaming, etc. So I requested Zantac. She's about 10.5 pounds and on .7ml 3 times/day. It worked really well for about a week. She was sleeping hours at a time and just a happy little gal! Now her sleep patterns are deteriorating again--she's waking all the time day and night and has started the screaming again.
I plan to call the ped tomorrow to see what she thinks. Is this normal? Have other folks found a med to work temporarily and then lose its effectiveness?
Thanks,
Nicole

Nicole, I am nt to sure- I think she is on a good dose of zantac- so I don't think she needs an increase. I believe that meds can lose their effectiveness. Maybe the zantac hasn't had time to work properly is all I can suggest- I would talk to the Dr. Is she breast fed, bottle and how are her BM's- could she be constipated?

I think her zantac needs to be upped. at 10 lbs Eric was taking 1mil 3x a day.
I would ask the doc about it.
And yeah I think zantac can just not be enough for some babies. We were lucky and had good success with it (When the dosage was right)

Jackson was on Zantac for a while, we had to up his dosage twice and then finally the dr. decided since he was on a good size dose for his weight, to put him on Prevacid. Ask the dr. if maybe there is another med. you can do. Let him know what she is doing.

Thanks for the advice.
I talked to the doctor this morning (not her regular ped, but another doc in the practice group). She thinks Mackenzie is on the "maximum dose" for her weight and doesn't want to up it. She suggested giving her Zantac and Maalox at the same time for a couple of days. Has anyone ever tried that combo? She said I could give it at the same time--and of course we did that this afternoon and dd spit it all up when I nursed her an hour later. If the combo doesn't help in the next day or so, she'll try Prevacid.
It's frustrating that there's apparently know universal agreement about dosage/weight! It sounds like Minnie's little guy, Eric, is the same weight (even a little less) and he takes more than Mackenzie.

Isn't it weird. I HATE that!
and they all think they're right!
We tried Maalox as a "little helper" and it didn't do a thing. Plus he hated it.
Then one time they wanted him off zantac just Maalox, and introduced reglan at the same time. That just doesn't make sense to me at all, but I was a good girl and I did it anyway.
Sometimes doc's can be so confusing.
Well,
good luck and I hope things start going better

I think that if they want her on Zantac and Maalox that the Zantac is not working (am I right everyone??) I think give it the time that they said and then hopefully they will switch you to Prevacid.

We have also been told we are on the maximun dose, but I have seen children on here who are on more. Parker now weighs 10kg (don't know pounds-sorry) and is on 2ml twice a day. We have tried prevacid and he had a very bad reaction.
I think there is a maximum as set out by zantac people which a lot of drs stick too, but I also think drs use their experience and up the dose- cause they have seen it probably does no harm and you get a better result.
