View Full Version : Prevacid Solutabs
firsttimemom 01-18-2006, 11:11 AM I just got thru reading when to take meds..very helpful. After using Zantac & finally giving it to my 11wk son, Noah(the correct way) it still isn't working. MD switched him to Prevacid Solutabs 2x/daily. I'm supposed to dissolve the tab in 5ml of water. Does anyone have experience on the best way to give this to him? When I use the syringe most of the meds get stuck on the sides & the same with the bottle. Also, how long does it take to see a difference? MD said a few days but I'm worried since he will be stopping the Zantac today. The Zantac didn't do much but it at least stopped the discomfort when eating.
EmmasMommy 01-18-2006, 11:15 AM The only way I could get the beads to not stick was use a glass medicine dropper and dissolve the pill in a bit of water in a shot glass. For some reason, the beads do not stick to glass.
Now, we just hand Em the pill and she pops it in her mouth.

How long did it take for the Prevacid to take effect? I see Emma is still on Zantac too.
EmmasMommy 01-18-2006, 12:20 PM It took Emma about a week to transition from Axid, (the med she was on prior - brith to 6 months old), to Prevacid. Then, over about a month her drinking improved. How much does Noah weigh? Emma is 19 pounds and is only on 15 mg of Prevacid.
Emma continues to have issues with solids, so recently, (in November), the GI put Emma on Zantac at bedtime to help with that and her nightwakings. It has helped, some.
The biggest thing that is helping Emma is total elimination of all milk and soy.
Let me know if you have any other questions. :-D
alliemom 01-18-2006, 01:00 PM For us, Prevacid took about 2 weeks to start working after the Zantac. After two weeks, she stopped screaming in pain....which was wonderful! (Although we still are having a lot of symptoms.)
This is how I give Allie the Prevacid: (hope this makes sense!)
I take a medicine dropper that you can take off the bulb/lid part. I put the solutab into the dropper, then suck up some water into it and shake it up. I then let Allie suck on the tip. I have to keep shaking it up so she doesn't suck a bunch of balls at once, or she spits them out. After she's finished the first dropper full, I usually have to suck up some more water and shake it up and give the rest to her so I can get the rest of the balls out of the dropper. Once she got the hang of sucking on the tip of the dropper......we finally were able to administer it to her without losing half the medication all over her chin and bib!
Hope that helps!

Noah weighs 11lbs.15oz. I guess its a high dose he's getting. I just hope this works. Thanks for the info Ladies!
ZacsMom 01-18-2006, 01:29 PM I have to say, the EASIEST way to give the solutabs is just by popping it in their mouth. It dissolves immediately and if you choose you can wash it down w/a couple MLS of water and you're done!
I'll type one this pamphlet says that I just happened to pick up at the GI yesterday:
"Giving medicine to your child can be a challenge. You may be looking for easy to take options. For children who have difficulty swallowing capsules, prevacid solutab is an easy to take tablet that simply melts in their mouth. And it can be taken anywhere, with or without water. "
That comes right from the manufacturer.

Did it really take a few days to work or a week? Is it safe to give both Zantac & Prevacid? It seems some of the ladies on this site do but my MD said not to. I'm just worried about the sleepless nights that might be headed my way.
ZacsMom 01-18-2006, 01:51 PM YES, my ped has said I could still give Zantac when needed eventhough he takes the prevacid aswell. They both have separate jobs. I have not needed to do it, but ped said it was fine.
Since Zac went from Zantac to prevacid the "waiting period" wasn't too long although I dont remember exactly how long before noticing, doesn't seem like it was more than a few days.
Sorry I'm late--my dd was on both Prevacid and Zantac up until we re-did all her meds about 2 weeks ago. It's safe to do this. We gave the Prevacid solutab in the morning and Zantac before bed.
I don't have any info re: an easy way to get the Prevacid into a baby...we just popped the solutab into Bethany's mouth and it dissolved really quickly.
It took about 2 weeks for us to start seeing improvement once she started taking the Prevacid. It really worked wonders for her (unfortunately, she has a dairy intolerance and we had to switch to Prilosec b/c the solutab has dairy solids in it.) :???:
Cindy 01-18-2006, 02:19 PM We just pop the solutabs into Kylie's mouth too and have been doing so since she was about 2 months old. If it gets pushed out some, I just tuck it back in. She loves it!
thepeach80 01-18-2006, 03:07 PM The zantac dose for 12# is 1.8-3.6ml. DRs often underdose the zantac for some reason. We've been on prevacid since about that weight, 2 mos to now, 13 mos and 20#. He's needed 15mg the whole time. We came off Prilosec though and I don't remember if it took time etc as nothing was working well before then. I would just stick it on a spoon and add a few drops of water so it gets mushy and give it that way. We just pop it in Evan's mouth now too though.
karie 01-20-2006, 01:36 AM We give both prevacid and pepcid( similar to zantac) I want to thank Emma's mom for the suggestion of using glass with the solutabs!! Sarah woould dry heave and gag on the solutab if I stuck it in her mouth and when I dissolved it in water the little pellets always stuck to the sides. Now using glass no more problems and I am able to draw up all the pellets.
thanks Emmas mommy!!!:-D
