View Full Version : ok, chiro. appt.
Emily M 01-18-2006, 09:02 AM Well, I took Jackson to the Chiro. last night, first of all, he talked to me, explained things. It really made alot of sense. He said that the 5 and 6 vertabrae (?) I think, are usually affected during childbirth, this affects the area around the stomach and affects digestion. So, really this explains why babies have such a hard time with their tummies for the first 8 weeks or so. Anyway, he, of course, doesn't believe in any kind of med. so the fact that Jackson is on Prevacid, he doesn't think it is doing him any good. He said that it will make him feel better for the moment, but not cure him. Well, true, but I need my baby to feel better! Anyway, we talked about Jackson's milk allergy and the fact that he sometimes spits up. Then he had me sit on his table and put Jackson on my lap, on his tummy, he pressed on his back with both hands, all the way down his back. I heard little pops all the way down. Jackson didn't cry. I almost did. He told me that it doesn't hurt him, but did I hear those pops. I said YES! He said that that was the places in his back that are out of wack, going back in. No wonder he wasn't comfortable. (the chiro. said)
Then we talked about Jackson having an ear infection at 3 weeks old. I told him that this was my second sign that he had AR because I had been extra careful not to lay him down to eat, blah blah blah! He said that there is a place in the neck that is also affected during birth that affects the tube (I forgot the name of it) that affects drainage and therefore causes ear infections. So, he said to lay him on his back and hold his body. I didn't know what he was going to do, he put his hands on his head, (he was going to pop his neck! ) I said, oh no, no, no! I really don't think that I can let you! He assured me that it wouldn't hurt him, blah blah blah! So, anyway, he didn't, I told him we will stick with what he did, for now and see how he does. He wants him back on Friday. He believes that he will be better (completely) by his 4th month (Jackson's) He said that he can't tell me to take him off of his Prevacid(which I absolutely would not do) but that he will not need it in a month. I am skeptical. I mean, it all makes sense, but like I told my dh, the Prevacid stops your body from making acid, right???? And the reason that AR babies spit up is because of that flap in their esophogaus(sp) that isn't mature, right?? So if that is true, how can him popping him help that? I can understand the stomach thing, but not the acid, yadda yadda yadda!
Well, I felt guilty all last night. I don't know why, I just had this horrible feeling, and I think that I regret taking him. I really don't think that we will go back. He didn't sleep any better last night than he normally does, and so, I don't know!
Sorry this is so long, had to get it off my chest!!!!
Am I a bad mother for taking him? I feel terrible! Like I am being selfish, wanting some peace.
Becky in NM 01-18-2006, 09:25 AM Thanks for sharing all that info. I've heard of other moms trying chiropractors. While you feel a bit guilty about what happened, it is good to explore all your options.
I hope you see some good results soon.
I wonder what the chiro would say about c-section babies. My guy was a super puker and has had multiple ear infections, but he never suffered the trauma of a vaginal birth.
sarahh 01-18-2006, 02:51 PM I agree with you there about the c-section delivery Becky.. maybe they would say it was the way they were lying in-utero????
Anyway, Emily, do NOT feel bad.. you were seeking alternative ways to try and help your baby (by alternative I mean you were thinking holistically- not just at meds). I think though, that if your gut instinct is saying "no" then don't carry on with it.....
(((HUGS)))
It's great that you went to see what the chiro had to say; however, if your gut is resisting, I'd not go again, at least for awhile, anyway.
Emily M 01-18-2006, 03:18 PM Thank you all for being so kind and supportive! I agree about the c-sec. babies, that is exactly what I thought last night when he was telling me.
It hasn't done at all what I heard it would, I really thought that it would help him nap. NOPE! No different.
AndrewsMommy 01-18-2006, 06:52 PM That is great that you were seeking other options for your little guy, however I have to agree with everyone else, if your gut is saying no then I wouldn't go back.
I find Chiropractors to be a bit strange. Their theories and remedies are different then what we think. They do not believe in medicating, where as in most cases we do. They also, don't immunize their kids with anything except Hib and Hepatitis b.
Working in the medical field for so long, I saw the strangest people roll through our office! So anyhow, not trying to offend anyone, I just think it is hard to connect with someone who doesn't have the same or similiar beliefs as you do as the childs mother. If that makes any sense??
Anyhow, sorry to ramble on and I hope Jackson starts sleeping better soon:-D
Research stroke victims from Chiropractic neck manipulations.

Research paralasis from neck and spinal manipulations.
I know you are desperate to help your child, we all are, but please please please research everything.
On July 19, 2001, Canadian stock car racer Alan Turner and his wife Jill filed a lawsuit charging that V. Gary Dyck, D.C., paralyzed their 11-year-old son James by manipulating his neck and back. The suit asks for a total of $2.75 million Canadian dollars: $500,000 for general damages, $1,000,000 for special damages; $1,000,000 for lost earning capacity, and $250,000 to compensate the boy's family. The suit papers state:
On July 24, 2000, James developed chest pains while swimming and was taken to the Dyck's office, where his neck and back were manipulated.
On the following day, although James was worse, Dyck manipulated him again.
As a result of the treatment by the Defendant, James's condition deteriorated rapidly and he was rushed to The Royal Victoria Hospital of Barrie where he was in great distress, having lost the use of his legs and bladder function. The pediatrician in charge arranged for an ambulance on an emergency basis to transfer James to The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto for an MRI and neurosurgical intervention.
When James arrived at the Hospital for Sick Children, a thorough examination and assessment revealed that he had a benign spinal cord tumor called a ganglioglioma. There was swelling in both the tumor and cord, which caused James to become permanently paralyzed. Emergency neurosurgery confirmed the presence of the tumor, and subsequent pathology examination confirmed that there had been an acute infarct of the tumor. (An infarct is a condition in which tissue dies as a result of loss of blood supply.)
The treatment has resulted in permanent paralysis of the legs, weakness of one hand, and poor bowel and bladder control.
Department of Pediatric Neurology, St. Louis Children's Hospital, MO 63110.
An infant with congenital torticollis underwent chiropractic manipulation, and within a few hours had respiratory insufficiency, seizures, and quadriplegia. A holocord astrocytoma, with extensive acute necrosis believed to be a result of the neck manipulation, was found and resected.
Leigh 01-18-2006, 07:21 PM Do not feel guilty at all. I would eat a cow paddy if someone could assure me it would cure my kids beyond a shadow of a doubt.
I have personally used chiropractors way in the past and they can be of a benefit. One good friend swears by them and has had all 3 of her kids adjusted throughout their years and she claims success. I have not considered a chiro, but I have used a Bowen therapist on Iain and Curran. They re-set muscles more than anything and it is very gentle what they do with kids. I am not sure how much they helped Curran with his bowel problems as I was only half way through the program and had to drop it as he was so chronically sick at the time. One thing I do know is that they have a movement that they do which INSTANTLY drains your sinus. It is amazing! I have had it done 3 times and once for each of the boys and it IS worth it. My Bowen therapist is not available for another month or so, but I will likely go back as it is not as likely to set my nerves on edge as a chiro would.
By the way, in defence of the chiro, I believe that they work on a series for things like this. In order to "cure" GERD they have to make several adjustments, not just one miraculous one. The trick is whether or not someone will follow through. Personally, I think that the LES is the problem and adjustment may be beneficial in some ways, but it will not cure GERD. Just my opinion and I hope someone proves me wrong.
The tubes you are thinking of are eustacian (sp?) tubes for the ear drainage.
I often look to other forms of medicine for answers and make an educated decision. I have several alternative practice books, but I have not really strayed much from the beaten path yet. Don't worry, I will not be a sandal wearing tree hugger stitching my hemp clothes with grass fibres anytime soon, but I sure do like to keep my options open.:-D
Shaes Grammy 01-18-2006, 07:46 PM What is Bowen therapist?
I don't think you should feel quilty about trying the chiropractor. Many people have good results, many think they are weird. Did the many that think they are weird ever try them?
I know my chiropractor helped me and he really cared. I think they are probably like regular doctors. You may get one you like and you may get one you don't like?
He didn't do anything to hurt your child, right?
I do agree with the others though, if you are NOT sure you want to follow through, then maybe you should not. I think we all have to go with our gut feelings.
Best wishes
Jean
