Connor started on Nexium today and the stuff is worse than Prevacid to give! It comes in pill form which his GI wants me to break open and give him 1/4 of it ( to see how he does on it) When I broke it open it had tons of little beads which went everywhere and it is so hard to figure out 1/4 when they just roll all over. The GI told me to mix it with a little formula ( I thought it couldn't be mixed?) or with applejuice which he's never had. I mixed it with his formula but it just stuck to the sides of the bottle. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get this stuff in him? The doctor doesn't want us to start solids until 6 or 7 months because of how sensitive his tummy is or I would mix it with applesauce. Please help!!! Thanks

Hi
I can't believe your Gi rec giving your ds half a capsule...that is so dumb (sorry, I guess I am just having a BAD day!)
Really, did the Gi ever open a capsule??
Anyway....my ds and dd were both on Nexium and we gave it to them with a little pears
We started my dd when she was about 3-4 mnths old and we gave her just enough to take the meds
From what I understand the meds need something acidic to break them down..pears or applesauce (never heard using formula??)
We gave dd 20mg total....1/2 capsule or 10mg am and 10mg pm.
How much does your ds weigh and how many mg should he get per day??

HI Kim I thought it was stupid to have to break the pills too! THe pills are 20 mg and she wants us to start with 1/4 of the pill a day to see if he has a reaction to it because with Prevacid and Prilosec he got horrible gas pains and watery poop and would scream all day. If he does ok on 1/4 capsule then she wants to move to 1/2 until we can work up to 1/2 in the am and 1/2 in the pm. Do they come in 10mg capsules? that would be so much easier than trying to break them up and having the beads go everywhere! OH to answer your question, Connor weighs 15#11oz. Did your little one do ok with the pears?

Yikes. Noah takes the solutab, so I don't have a clue about this. It sounds like a mess, though, since you have to split it four ways. Could you call the pharmacy and see if they have any suggestions? I've found that some pharmacists have excellent info on things like this. Good luck, and please update us on how Connor reacts. I hope it helps and doesn't cause problems for him!

Hi just an update on Connor. He had a really rough day today! I got him to take the Nexium by putting in a spoonful of rice cereal but he screamed all day long. I don't want to just automatically think it was the meds but this is the same thing that happend last time and with each day he took the med he got worse. Should I try to hang in there and see how he does? Did anyone else have this problem with PPI's and it got better with time?

I would say hang ing there... sometimes it gets worse before it gets better as they transition from one drug to another. (((HUGS))) those rough days are the worst.

I am new to the message board. My GI started my daughter on Prilosec yesterday. We were unsuccessfull with the Zantac. Thickened formula made things much worse and she ended up with 2 ear infections. Is there any advice from anyone out there?

You'll find tonnes of information in the links to the left and also in the New Articles forum.

Does it take awhile for some of the meds become effective? My daughter seems to fuss more after her med, and then refuse her bottle. Help!!! Also, when did your GI say to give the 2 doses? Mine suggested 15 min prior to a bottle...which has made her much fussier.
