View Full Version : anybody ever try chiropractor?
Emily M 01-16-2006, 03:41 PM I have a friend who is a chiropractor. His wife suggested that I bring Jackson about a month ago. I was LEARY! But tomorrow we are going to talk to him. I just wondered if anyone has tried this route and had any success???
KaitlynsMom 01-16-2006, 03:48 PM I have never taken Kaitlyn to one but there was a mom here who was taking her child and I think I remember her saying that in the few visit she had gone to she noticed a bit of a decrease in spit up and a little less discomfort but it hadnt cured it.
I talked to the Chiro I was going to and she said she would be willing to do my daughter if I wanted to... but I think we're managing pretty well and I dont want to do that. She did tell me that they dont do what they do to adults to the babies. She said it's very very gentle massaging and slight adjusting... but not the hard manipulation they do to adults. I dont think it's necessary for infants and children anyway seeing is they probably are still pretty aligned!
If you do go, please keep us posted on the progress, I'm sure others would love to hear how it's going!!
Emma's mom 01-16-2006, 04:16 PM I am so glad you have asked this question. I have had three different people tell me that is what I need to do for Emma. My pediatrician was appalled and said "no way". But I am curious if anyone has done it with success. I am very cautious and don't know if I could go through with it on a 6 month old, but some days I am desperate for a cure!
ZacsMom 01-16-2006, 04:46 PM i've heard about this before and it being a possibility to look into.
monkeymom 01-16-2006, 11:10 PM We're going to one now and I am not really impressed but I am also very impatient and expect results pretty quickly.
We've had 4 visits. On the first visit he gave us Probiotics to give Miranda. I researched them and couldn't find any harm in giving them so we did. DH also wanted to trial no meds. So we did.
Well the spitting up got progressively worse and she started to seem like she was starting to have pain again so we are back on the Prevacid and I stopped the Probiotics not because I think they were the cause of anything but moreso becuase I just can't remember something else.
There really is no harm in going. They are very gently and honestly Miranda was quite crooked and she is straighter and she sleeps well after our visits. I may give it a little longer but I am still on the fence.
Let us know how it goes.
Emily M 01-17-2006, 08:51 AM To be honest, his med. is working rather well. I am hoping that he will be able to give me an answer as to why he doesn't hardly nap during the day. He will sleep for maybe 30 min. then wake himself up. He had a pretty traumatic birth (I pushed for a while, couldn't get him out, his heartrate dropped, then finally my dr. had to pull him out) when he came out his arm was up by his ear. So I thought that he could "straighten" him out that way. I'm like you, I'm also inpatient and want results immediately!!!!
Question, what are probiotics?(sp)
I've taken Bethy to my chiro a couple of times. He focuses more on the sleep issues than the GERD. (He sees lots of kids for adjustments). I did notice improved sleep the day or two after the appts, but then back to square one.
I've wondered if her sleep would improve if we went more regularly...?
BTW--on kids, chiros don't do "adjustments" the way they do adults--all they do is help reposition the atlas by gently having baby put his head up against a soft cushion. (I probably just butchered the whole procedure--just wanted you to know that it's minimally invasive and that they should NEVER, under ANY circumstances "crack" the baby's back or do any other sort of manipulation!--at least, that's what both my chiro and my ped told me...)
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
I don't trust them with myself so I would trust one with my children.
Having my entire family in the medical field, I've heard way too many horror stories.

That is sooo what I am wondering, about the sleep thing. If we went regularly if it will help his sleeping. First visit is $35 and then thereafter each visit is $12. Thanks also for letting me know what they are supposed to do. That was my initial concern, his wife did tell me that it is kind of like massage, etc.
smredinger 01-17-2006, 04:35 PM Hi,
I took my daughter Allison to a chiro starting at about 8 wks old. It may have helped straighten her out (chiro said she was a bit crooked probably from laying in the same position in utero for so long which made sense to me), but it really didn't do anything for the reflux. After about $800 in treatments I stopped. I don't regret it, but as I said - no change in the reflux. The best thing has been the Prilosec. Allie is now 9 months old - still spitting up, but HAPPY and developing normally. Will be glad when I'm not wiping up spit up anymore, but am so glad those miserable first months are long behind us.

Miori 01-17-2006, 04:41 PM I have a friend who takes her 18mth old to the chiro. He has grown really fast and it helped him, she said.
Not sure if my little on needs it - but I sure do!! Not to get off the topic too much, but I've never had back pain like I've had the past 5 months (since Joshua was born.) Any tips on how to find a good one?
Shaes Grammy 01-17-2006, 05:10 PM I had seen a chiropractor after I had two minor car accidents. It was nice b/c he took xrays and had another funny machine that kind of showed me pictures of what my back really looked like. Very interesting. At first, it hurt a lot whatever he was doing. But I expected it too, after all I was crooked, right. So obviously, to me, to straigthen would hurt some.
In his office he had testimony books and my attention went to a women that had reflux and raved about how much it helped her.
I told him about Shae-Lynne, so when she came to visit he offered to see her for free. She was terrified of him and overtired and cranky. Anyway he gave me a little machine to take home and use on her while she was here. It was kind of weird. This was a few years ago, but I remember a small box with a little wand type thing that light up (I think?) and we were to go up and down in front of her chest with it. Not actually touching the chest.
Roni wanted no part of this weirdness (eye rolling) but did allow me to do it to Shae-Lynne. I did not notice any difference whatsoever, but then again she was only here awhile. I think it was nice that he gave us the machine to try.
So let us know if your guy does that same machine thing. Good luck, let us know how you make out.
Best wishes
Jean
Shaes Grammy 01-17-2006, 05:14 PM Also, the chiropractor thought that massage would help me and he wrote me a prescription to have some back massages. THAT is what really helped me the most.
Anyway, remembering that made me think when Shae-Lynne was very young and we weren't sure what was wrong and I was contacting EVERYONE to get their input, Dr Bernie Siegel (author Love, Medicine & Miracles, among others) actually sent Roni a massage kit to try on Shae-Lynne.
I never did see the kit he sent, but makes me wonder does anyone know what I am talking about. Has anyone ever tried this on their gerdling? With what results?
ZacsMom 01-17-2006, 05:37 PM I dont know, Jean...but (speaking of weirdness) has anyone heard of Reiki??
Shaes Grammy 01-17-2006, 05:53 PM Of course, I love it. We are talking now about us...or our little refluxers? I've gone several times, three different Reiki experts. I would definitely recommend it. Very nice, very relaxing, very nice overall feeling. I'm kind of short on funds, or I would do it more. That is me personally, I don't know about the little ones though????
