Sorry, I did a search but TMI! I'm too brain dead!

For those of you using prevacid...
How long did it take to "kick in"?
What were the side effects/demeanor changes that you noticed?
What age did you start it at?

Thanks! Julie

Hi Julie - Joshua was on Zantac first, at about 5 weeks old. We tried that for a month and didn't see much relief for him, so he was switched to Prevacid. We saw good effects within a week or so. By his 4 month appt, his reflux had "peaked" so his dose was increased. He is now a pretty happy little guy with very few episodes.

Hope that helps!

Thanks, it does. Did you notice any side effects? Maybe not because you had already been giving Zantac? Thanks!

Hi

We are trying Zach on prevacid for the 2nd time :)
He is 26mnths and 27 pounds and on 30mg a day
At first he seemed very gassy but I think after the first 2-3 weeks it got better
I would say it took a good 10 days or so to kick in..we switched from prilosec

Good Luck
Kim

Frankie has been on Prevacid since November. It has made a world of difference in his pain management. For a while he had gross green slimey pop...that went away and he did have gas. But nothing unmanageable. I did not notice anything about behavior, although I have read that sometimes that can happen. We give him the solutabs 7.5 mg am and then 7.5 mg in the pm. I hope it works out for ya!

Kylie started on it at 4 weeks old. She was on too mild a dose from her ped. so the GI bumped it and then it took almost two weeks for us to notice a difference. The first four weeks she had pretty painful gas. We kept the Mylicon handy and switched to Dr. Brown's bottles which helped more than anything and just about solved it along with time. Bright green poops here also for about the same time. But I'd do it all again in a heartbeat because Prevacid was the answer for us. We just hit four months and are having to adjust both Prevacid and Reglan up too. Last wk. has been h*&& but it's beginning to improve again and I'm looking forward to my happy, smiling baby again! Best of luck with the Prevacid and I hope it works quickly for both of you!

Maybe I haven't given it enough of a chance. All this regurgitation is killing me!

Hi,
For Zac, he was on Zantac and then switched to prevacid, if I recall correctly, it didn't take long at all...it was a great switch for us. ALthought one side effect he had for a couple weeks was stinky, runny poop. It stopped after a while. However, i'm STILL not convinced that prevacid was NOT the culprit of his chronic constipation for months (we are medicating for this now, aswell). He started prevacid at 12 weeks.

Okay - I'm trying this again. We took a few days off now I'm going to start the prevacid again and see if it helps.

Will it help with the spitting? I know Zantac helps with the pain, but I'm hoping this will help cut down on the constant regurgitation. It doesn't always come out of her mouth but I see her little face change colors...

Reflux sucks. I guess I should stop feeling sorry for myself. It could be much worse.

We first tried prevacid at 14 months and it was a disaster due to Iain being a complete non-eater. What we could shove into him was not very much and it caused liquid green poops and horrid gastro issues. We were convinced by my ped to try again this October (age 20 months) and it has made the world of difference for Iain. Truly, a miracle drug. We had some little gas issues, but none of the liquid poop and bloating, etc. It took about a week or slightly more to make a difference.

I would wonder if you should run something like zantac alongside while you are re-establishing prevacid? Or some OTC drug? We use both here and it works for us.

Don't worry about venting. Here, we all have that right. Reflux sucks, no matter what the scenario is for your child.

From my understanding, prevacid has nothing to do w/the amount of spitting/puking. It's sole purpose is to reduce the acidic pain that comes along w/it.

The hardest thing for me to accept was the dr.'s and nurses(who I called quite frequently) telling me it takes time. I couldn't believe that and just knew it wasn't going to work or I needed some different info., a new dr., etc. When your baby is hurting, results should darn well be immediate!!!! Now looking back, I know they were right but it still ticks me off that something else couldn't be done to help the adjustment. Our GI didn't want us to but it sounds like the zantac along with the Prevacid really seems to help a lot. Go ahead and vent, I've invented a few new curse words in the last four months myself!!!!!
