View Full Version : Could Noah need MORE Prevecid?

Okay, yesterday afternoon/early evening, Noah went through a few hours of nonstop crying, where he would frequently let out high pitched glass breaking shrieks. I almost took him to the ER around 7 when things were not improving, but he had no other symptoms. An hour after his night time dose of Prevecid (1 solutab=15 mg) he was doing great and drank an Alimentum bottle with no problem. :???:

The high pitched shrieking has been a lovely addition to his symptoms the past two months, but yesterday was by far the worst. I never quite knew what brought them on and they usually didn't last long or were few and far between.

Brian had night class, and when he arrive home at 10:00, I told him about the terrible night and how I could not figure out what was wrong with him. ***Lightbulb over Brian's head*** He remembered that he forgot to give Noah his morning dose of Prevecid (1/2 solutab). :violent1: AHHHHH!!!! We had never missed his meds before, so we didn't even know what to look for!

Anyways, we are giving Noah the entire solutab before bed because when we split it three ways, his sleeping was significantly worse. We have made a good connection between giving the whole pill at night and a better night's sleep (still not good, though). But, yesterday made me realize that those shrieks often come around 5, after its been 10 hours since his first dose, but if I give him a 1/2 then, they come at 4 am, which sucks even worse.

Could it be that he needs an additional 1/2? I feel like he's already taking such a big dose, so I don't want to push it, but it seems like that might be the answer.

I think that going back to Alimentum (which we have done) and a med increase might be what Noah needs. I really didn't think he needed more meds, but after I saw how he responded yesterday after a missed dose, I made a clear connection. BTW--He had this vomit smelling cloud following him all afternoon. He also cried so hard that it induced gags that produced projectile vomit. Yeah, super fun.

I don't have an answer Maggie, but that answers my problem that I had with Jackson last week.
He is on Zantac and I give it to him at 7am and 7pm, well I decided that maybe he would do better if I gave it to him right before bed. BIG MISTAKE:smt018 He hadn't had it in, oh 15 hours and so when he got it at 10pm and then ate, YIKES! He screamed from 10-2am, non-stop. Thrashing and kicking, clawing at my face, nothing that I did could calm him down. I thought that he was maybe overtired and refluxing, but now I think that it was just the med. too late.(sorry rambling! )
Hope that things are better for Noah.

A med. increase might not hurt, it's always a guessing game, even for the dr.

Oh no. Poor Noah, and poor you. :(

Maybe Noah just needs a few days to get the milk and soy out of his system? I would call his GI, though, and get his opinion.

Emma gets her whole Prevacid solutab in the morning and then Zantac at night. Would your GI be open to adding an H2 blocker at night?

Not to burst the bubble, early, though. It's not working for Emma...she has tons of nightwakings...but it may work for Noah.

I saw a study somewhere- I can't remember where- maybe someone posted it here. Anyway it stated that infants have a better night sleep when given ppi and H2 blocker together before bedtime. Maybe you could ask your GI about that.

Hi

I also have an April refluxer...
She is a big girl, around 23 pounds...our GI is very aggressive but said we couldn't try more than 22.5mg of prevacid

She is currently on compounded prilosec, but picking it up every 2 weeks is a pain (plus we pay a full 30 day co-pay every time we pick it up)..so I asked the Gi what her prevacid dose would be in case we decided to try and switch her

What works for now....this is after lots of trial and error and experience, this being my 2nd refluxer
Her schedule is 10mg prilosec when she wakes and 10mg about 3:30, then she gets a full dose of pepcid 2ml before bed
She eats well, never cries and is generally very happy and easy going
Lately she has been sleep MUCH better (knock on wood!)
She goes to bed about 7:00 wakes at 2:00 for a quick bottle then back down until 6:00

I also wanted to add my 2yr old refluxer is about 26-27 pounds and is on 30mg prevacid and it seems like he needs MORE
I am trying to talk our Gi into trying 45mg to see if it helps
I've heard you can't OD on PPI's...so if they are going to help our little ones be pain free...and a high dose is nec..I say we should have the right to try it

sam gets 1/2 solutab in am and 1 solutab in PM--we started this when he was refluxing more because of a cold--seems to be working

Poor Noah! You may need one or not, if the doc will let you do a trial run that would be great. Eli took a high dose, he had too to get it under control....

I think I will ask to do a trial run, if he says its safe. We're in between GIs until Feb. 1st, so that puts us in a crappy situation! Our previous GI did suspect that Noah was absorbing the meds too quickly, whatever the heck that means, but that's why he goes through so many doses.

Amanda--A fill-in Ped. at our previous office had suggested this to me once, and I should have jumped at the offer, but I let him send me away with no prescription for some odd reason. I will definitely ask Noah's new GI about this (and since Leigh strongly recommends it;).)

AHHHH! Listen to this CRAP. Our old GI recommended that I give Noah the Gerber fruit dices to try to see if they went over better than solids. I ignored him. Then, my new ped recommended it the other day, so I thought I'd try it. Noah ate about 5-7 pieces, and he woke up over and over bloated like a balloon! What he h*ll is going on, here?

We discussed the issue of using a PPI with the GI on Tuesday and he said that he thought that they could work well together as a PPI only blocks stomach acid by 80% and that in his opinion Zantac actually deals with pain issues better. However in our case he would not do this as he feels that is still only dealing with symptoms and he wants to deal with the underlying cause of Maya's reflux which he feels in MSPI. Oh well only time will tell.
