View Full Version : Questions about Reglan
Emma's mom 01-10-2006, 05:10 PM Hi again. Some you may remember I posted several days ago about my 5 month old's reflux getting worse. Well, I took her to the Ped. and at least she took me seriously. She has increased her Zantac dose and wants to put her "Reglan". I have read some really scary things about potential long-term side effects of Raglan. Anyone have any experience with it, or can confirm the side effects? Thanks! By the way, I have stopped solids with Emma except Oatmeal and bannanas and she is doing much better. Just cannot tolerate veggies yet I guess....

kimber 01-10-2006, 06:06 PM Hi
I'm sure I've read in another post and my brain is just fried at the moment but how old is Emma?
My refluxer is almost 9 mnths and really can't tolerate solids
For now we stick with sweet potatoes, peas and squash but she can only tolerate maybe 2 ounces or so per day
I give her maybe 6-7 heaping baby spoonfulls, 2x per day
Cereal was the worst and caused major reflux flare up and gas..we avoid it completely
I would rather hold off on solids then add in more meds
Also, is Emma pooping every day?
I know both my refluxers slept, ate better and refluxed mess when they were going daily
I also have a 2yr old refluxer so I've been around for a while and have read very bad things about reglan and have also heard it was a life saver for some
If you decide to try reglan I would start at a very low dose and keep a close eye out for side effects..you could always stop the med if you see something that bothers you
I personally never tried it with either kids...just didn't sit right with me
BUt I also think it depends if your dd is FTT....
Is your dd throwing up HUGE amounts, miserable, screaming...
If the issue is more about reflux pain and feeding issues, personally I would try all PPI's first before jumping to reglan
For some PPI's have side effects but you can usually find one that works well for your refluxer....
Sorry so long winded
Good Luck with your decision..let me know if you have any questions

Hi there,
I just wanted to let you know that we tried Reglan for one of our boys. We got desperate, he was refusing food and losing weight despite prevacid. Anyway, he didn't have any side effects at all, but it also didn't help. One thing that the doctors told us is that if they have side effects, they will generally show up in the first 24 hours so at least you will know right away. We just got a prescription for Erythromycin because our new GI says it actually works better and has less side effects. Maybe that is something you could consider if Reglan scares you.
I hope whatever you decide, it works out helping.
Take care,
Kristina

ElisMom 01-10-2006, 06:32 PM That is good news! hopefully, it will help. You can give the reglan a try, if you notice any side effects stop it immediately. Alot of kids on here take it successfully. Our GI won't use it on patients, so we used bethanechol and erythromyicin.
melba19 01-10-2006, 07:38 PM HI and i have four kids that have been and still are on reglan. Presently I have one child on it now and he has been on now for over 5yrs with no problelms. Yes this med can cause side affects just like any other med out there used in children can. Most people either hate this med or love it. I know from first hand experience that it can really work and that for some it doesnt make any difference. I truthfully think that it is decision that cant be made slightly but if needed then should maybe tried. I do wish you luck and hope that you can find a solution that will help.

Emma's mom 01-10-2006, 08:02 PM Thanks for the link PT I will definintly check it out. I am very cautious about this med, and may actually try the increased dose of Zantac for a while before making a decision about the Reglan. I agree with you Kim that I think I will continue to eliminate some solids in prevention. So, what I am giving her is two small feedings of oatmeal with a little fruit during the day. That seems o.k. And, NO Emma isn't pooping everyday. She is still breastfed so my Ped. says it isn't a problem, but I think it bothers her. She tolerates pears and bannanas well, but they don't help her poop much. Any suggestions? Oh, she is five months old....
alitressa 01-10-2006, 08:04 PM Actually Reglan's side effects are a little more serious than other medications given to reflux children. Use can cause neurological side effects knownas Tardive Dyskinesia which can be a serious and at times permanent movement disorder. So, use of it should not be taken lightly. Side effects do manifest quickly like others said and also like Elismom said you would want to stop giving it immediately if side effects appear. Many peds are fully aware of these side effects although they often suggest it use to treat reflux. Did your ped mention trying a PPI before maybe trying Reglan - that might be a place you would be more comfortable starting.
CadysMommy 01-10-2006, 08:07 PM My daughter Cady was on Reglan for 3 mos. with decent success. She started to eat more about 2 weeks into it. She still spit up, but she definitely had a better appetite. She never had any side effects, besides irritability and reduced formula intake for about 10-14 days after first starting it. The GI took her off, as he was not convinced that she had DGE. She's been fine without it.
Leigh 01-10-2006, 08:58 PM No experience here with Reglan. I just wanted to pop in and say hi and that I am so glad you are getting somewhere with your GI.:-D
Emma's mom 01-10-2006, 10:23 PM Thanks Leigh! What is funny is that I took Emma in today because I have been really frustrated with her latest episodes....and today she has been great, hardly spitting up at all!! Go figure! But then again, there is always tommorow!
karie 01-11-2006, 01:40 AM Hi-
my computer has been down so I haven't been able to talk. Sarah has been on reglan but we stopped it recently because it really hasn't done anything for her. She also has DGE. Erythromycin has been much more helpful for the emptying for us. I read that the risks of serious side effects from reglan increase the longer you take it especially if you take it longer than 1 year.

kimber 01-11-2006, 10:30 AM Hi again
I just wanted to say that my ds was b/f and didn't go daily and I was told be EVERYONE not to worry, blah blah didn't make a difference
Looking back I really think that was a HUGE part of the problem and why he was so uncomfy (and refluxing more)
With my dd, we were told by St Joseph's feeding center to use supp daily (I know everyone doesn't agree) but we did, and I think she was a much happier baby (better eater etc) because of this....
I tried small amount of different baby foods and still couldn't get her going on her own..it seems lost of reflux babies have immature or slow digestive systems
Anyway, I finally decided to try mirilax (similiar to lactuslose (sp)...it adds water to the stool)
It's only been 2 days so i am trying to adjust the amount to see how she will respond
Good Luck and let me know how it goes or if u have any questions
Recently though, when dd's reflux flared reducing the amount of baby food made the BIGGEST difference
Good Luck, Kim
Leigh 01-11-2006, 09:07 PM Thanks Leigh! What is funny is that I took Emma in today because I have been really frustrated with her latest episodes....and today she has been great, hardly spitting up at all!! Go figure! But then again, there is always tommorow!
I told my ped that Curran was resembling Linda Blair from the Exorcist with all his puking, especially as a toddler being presented with food. So, I hauled his little butt into the peds office and gave him some crackers. He said "no". I offered a cookie and he ate one right in front of her while I waited for the puke. Nothing. We left with the ped saying "strong gag reflex" and not to worry about it as Walker had had it, too.:-? When we went out into the waiting room a woman took out a meat sandwich to feed her child and Curran puked everywhere when he looked at it. At least the ped knew I was not nuts, yet we still did not get diagnosed.
Fascinating how it does not always work to get them at their worst to the ped. I am hoping that "tomorrow" was just as good for you as today was!:-D (the limited spitting up.)
