View Full Version : How often do you medicate?
Leigh 01-09-2006, 07:25 PM Iain is on both prevacid and zantac. We give him his prevacid in the morning. Although we have been told we can give the zantac in the morning and then again before dinner we do not as it seemed moot since he would have the prevacid in the morning. He is backarching like mad still and the ped wants us to give him the zantac 3X daily now as he is waking up from naps screeching and backarching. I asked if we should give him the zantac in the morning with the prevacid and she said to call the pharmacy. Does anyone give the two together? And, how many are giving meds more than once or twice a day?
I am still giving Curran the prevacid in the morning and zantac at night, although I have been trying to pull off the zantac.
jskmommy 01-09-2006, 07:45 PM We are still in the early trial and error stages of Jack's silent reflux, but we started giving Zantac (1st drug we tried) 3x daily at .7mL each time. That actually was helping, then it started not helping and they had us switch to Prilosec 1x daily which wasn't doing anything, so they told us to switch back to Zantac 3x daily, now at 1mL each time.
They never had us try Prilosec 1x daily with Zantac at other times of the day or both at the same time, but like I said we're still new to reflux and working on trial and error to get it under control so they might not want us mixing drugs yet for that reason.
EmmasMommy 01-09-2006, 07:50 PM Emma's GI put her on Prevacid Solutabs, 15 mg, first thing in the morning. Her Zantac, (currently 1.7 mL), is given at bedtime.
Before, Emma was only on Prevacid Solutabs, 1/2 pill in the a.m. and 1/2 in the p.m.
Her GI thinks that the Prevacid is important to give first thing to help her eat and nap well during the day. The idea is the Zantac helps to control her acid during the nightime, and give her that extra boost of acid blocking, since the Prevacid is SUPPOSED to be a 24 hour pill.
Poor Iain. Emma has been backarching in her highchair lately. It has to hurt. :(
Maggie takes 30mg of Prevacid in the morning so she'll eat, 15mg at night so she can sleep.
KaitlynsMom 01-09-2006, 09:39 PM We give Kaitlyn hers 3x's a day too. It was twice a day but that wasn't cutting it, so the GI had us do 3x's for all day coverage.
Hope that helps :)
KellyW 01-09-2006, 10:21 PM We give Ali both Prilosec and Pepcid. We were told NOT to give the two together, as the Prilosec needs the acid in order for it to work. Pepcid reduces the acidity. Therefore, giving a PPI and an H2 blocker at the same time just cancels the PPI out. We give her Prilosec when she wakes, Pepcid at noon, Prilosec at 5pm, and Pepcid around 10pm. We try to leave at least two hours in between doses.
ElisMom 01-09-2006, 11:07 PM we gave prilosec 3 times a day plus mylanta when needed. and we took bethanechol and erythromyicin 3 times a day too
kimber 01-10-2006, 08:54 AM Hi
I was also told if you are using a PPI and zantac/pepcid to make sure they are spaced 2 hrs apart and it's best to give the PPi first thing in the am
After LOTS of trial and error what we found works for my dd is a prilosec dose at 6:30 and 4:00 and pepcid before bed
With my ds, 2yrs old, we give him his full dose of prevacid, 30mg in the am and he sleeps well w/ out any additional meds at night
Good Luck
Kim
Janette 01-10-2006, 10:07 AM Evan takes Losec every morning and Domperidone 4x per day...once before every meal and once before his bedtime snack.
LaurensMommy 01-10-2006, 10:24 AM Lauren is on Zantac only. She gets it with her am bottle, before lunch, and her afternoon bottle. She does ok without it with dinner or her bedtime bottle.
Sam's Mom 01-10-2006, 10:45 AM Sam now gets 1/2 solutab in AM and 1 full solutab (15mg) in PM, We recently added the 1/2 tab in AM during the last cold because he was refluxing so much more.
alitressa 01-10-2006, 01:07 PM It used to be standard practice for GIs to tell patients not to give H2 blockers with PPIs as the H2 blocker would cancel out the PPI. But a study in 2004 (Rackoff, Andrew. (2004). Histamine-2 Receptor Antagonist at Night Improve GERD Symptoms for Patients on Proton Pump Inhibitor therapy. [Abstract]. American Journal of Gastroenterology, 99, 52) found that taking both Zantac and a PPI at night can reduce the occurance of nocturnal acid breakthrough so more GIs are suggesting that the two can be given together effectively. This is why ladies they call it the "practice" of medicine, things are always changing.
Minnie 01-10-2006, 03:04 PM HI leigh,
I've been trying to keep track of every one, and keep every straight, but
I don't remember...
Is he still eating really well like he was? Oh, I hope so. (oh just lie to me and say that he is! O.K.?)
Anyway,
It doesn't seem like it would do any good to give the 2 at the same time, but maybe something like this:
Prevacid before eating in the morn,
then zantac after his breakfast. Then zantac at nap time (I use the term loosely cause I know the words sleep schedule probably isn't in your vocabulary right now) and then zantac again before bed at night.
Or Half prevacid in the morn and half before his last meal if night time isn't going well either.
I don't know. All I know is when I changed and started giving the zantac after meals (instead of before), and just before sleep it made all the difference for Eric.
I hope you figure something out that does the trick. Poor little guy
AndrewsMommy 01-10-2006, 07:12 PM Andrew takes his Zantac twice daily.
So far that is the only med he is on as they have not figured out if anything else is wrong besides GERD.
