I thought that I posted this once, but now can't find the thread, so maybe I am having a mommy moment of memory lapse! Anyway, Jackson is on 2 ml of Zantac a day and it doesn't really seem to be working. Good days and bad. Is Prevacid or Prilosec better in anyone else's opinion?:smt017 He goes to the dr. on Wednesday and I wanted to approach the subject. It shouldn't be hard to get him to switch him should it????

I don't think that it's a case of one being better than the other. It's more a case of which med. works best for which child. Interesting thread title, BTW!

sarah started on pepcid which is similar to zantac and t didn't do enough for her so we added prevacid. I think the ppi drugs(like prevacid, prilosec are great and it zantac isn't enough then they should be added. Our GI kept us on both pepcind and prevacid- so that the two different mechanisms would work together to block as much acid as possible.

I thought that was rather catchy!:happy10:

Hi

I would make sure your ds is on a high enough dose of zantac first, but if that still didn't work I wouldn't hesitate to try a PPI
My ds was on zantac for 5 mnths and it worked but we had to increase his dose every few weeks
With my dd pepcid did NOTHING so after 2-3 weeks we quickly moved to a PPI
Just be warned when switching from zantac to a PPI it takes 2 weeks for the new med to kick in...see if your Dr will allow your ds to stay on zantac
IF NOT, it's like your poor little man isn't on any reflux meds
Also, with the PPI's my dd was gassy at first but it seemed to get better as she adjusted
Any questions, let us know!

Good Lukc

Noah only responded well to Zantac for a week or two, then, even with upping the meds with his weight, he needed something more. We've been on Prilosec and now Prevecid since he was roughly four months, and they both have seemed to at least take the pain out of the refluxes. He typically doesn't scream when he refluxes or spits up with the PPI.

I agree that you should make sure the Zantac can't be increased before trying another med, since it could possibly do the trick! Good luck!

I would try increasing the zantac first, then having a plan of action to go to a PPI within a agreed timeline. If the GI knows that you are going to be patient and try a drug but demand some relief within a reasonable length of time then they will be more open to prescribing a PPI should the zantac not do the trick. It does "time out" on many kids, no matter how large the dose is.

Iain and Curran are both on prevacid and zantac. Zantac was our first saviour drug as it got a 100% non-eater to open his mouth within 3 days for some first time non combatant puree. It did wear down and we had to wait until he became efficient with swallowing and eating before trying our second stab at the prevacid this October. I do the prevacid happy dance every day as it has made a big difference. Having said that, we are increasing his zantac as he is backarching more due to his food intake being up.

Bottom line, you will likely always have to adjust.

I agree that the PPIs can cause stomach upset. With our first trial of prevacid we had nothing but liquid green poops and loads of gastro issues, and we were unable to get much into him. Now, with the second time around he is fine, no problems at all.:-D

It just depends on the child. Eli did not do well with prevacid but prilosec worked wonders for him... :) I have brain farts all the time!
