View Full Version : Too much acid in pee or poop or what?
Carla 01-08-2006, 01:17 AM My 3 year old still sleeps in a pull up. Sometimes she poops in it in the morning before it is changed. All the times she goes in the toilet it is formed and normal. All the times she goes in her pull up early morning when waking it is soft/watery and green and the foulest smell--so different than normal and it burns her skin! Every part that was touched flares up for the entire day. Could this be that something in her diet isn't agreeing with her? Also, she took two rounds of antibiotics and broke out into a huge rash all over her private area that has since shrunk in the amount of area it covered, but is still there no matter what we do. Maybe yeast but it isn't white. She is in underwear and dry all day and evening, she just sleeps in a pull-up that is dry almost all night. What gives with her pee and poop???
scarlet 01-08-2006, 08:49 AM Cooper is 3 1/2 and he only wears a nappy at night. I know that if he poops in his nappy it does really smell, you probably can't notice the smell if she goes in the toilet. Also with a nappy she may have done it a little while before and the longer she has worn it the more it may smell. Coopers is also a lot softer in a nappy and I put it down to just the pressure ie him sitting etc. and it moves it around- it is definately softer. Its also sometimes green.
The rash may be because of acid, or just from wee/poo being in contact with her skin. When a baby and in nappies all the time their bum actually becomes a bit water proof and once out of nappies it dries up (if you like) it isn't able to have the same amounts of wee/poop on it before and it becomes irritated easier.
The other rash I would go t the Dr and check out in case it is anything to wory about.
At three, maybe you can teach your daughter that when she wakes in the morning to take her nappy off first thing and you may not have the same problems.
Janette 01-08-2006, 12:07 PM Have you tried Monistat cream or something similar for the rash? You might also want to look into a Nystatin (antifungal) cream.
I agree with Rachel that a BM in the toilet will smell alot less than one in a diaper/pull-up. The green colour, though, makes me wonder if her stomach is "out" or if it's something that she eats every evening that she's reacting a bit too. Jennifer (thepeach80) or Leigh (Chako) may have a better idea.
Leigh 01-08-2006, 02:47 PM So, she only produces this poop while in the pullup and overnight? I would wonder if it is run off poop. Does she ever suffer from costipation?
Foods or irritations in general (meds) can cause that wonderous liquid green foul smelling poop, but it should not come only at one time. I would make a log of what she eats for a couple of weeks, including what she drinks and write down when she has these poops and what the other poops look like throughtout the day. You can do some detective work to figure it out if it is indeed a food trigger.
For instance, you give her a glass of milk at 7 pm and the next morning she has the poop. Next night you give her only a glass of water and does the poop happen again? Bear in mind that food takes a few days to go through our systems so look in previous days as well, not just the day of the poop. A good rule of thumb is that it takes about 3 days for most foods to get out of your system, but that is in general and not for all foods but should give you a good starting point. We are doing a multiple food eliimination diet right now and it is centered around 7 days to bring our systems to bland.
The rash sounds like sensitive skin in contact with nasty poop. I would air dry her and if it clears up on its own it it not a yeast infection. Yeast infections are NOT white, rather a very angry red.
Check out this link for common diaper rashes.

Curran still has blowouts at times (in fact, another one today) and he is 4 years old. We do not use pullups anymore as he was reliant on them too much and pullups do lock in the stuff and do not allow for any breathing, so if she poops at the begining or middle of the night she is perculating in that stuff for quite awhile and it will burn.
The antibiotics do make me wonder if it is yeast. Monistat as Janette suggested would be a good start if things are not clearing up otherwise. We use canestan creme here. Also, think about giving her some acidopholus to help her get her flora going again.
sixdogssixcats 01-08-2006, 02:48 PM An acid burn in the diaper area will look like a burn, not a diaper rash. Like if you burn your hand on a hot iron. They are exceptionally painful for diaper-wearing kidlets. It would take both dh and me to hold Trey down when he'd get an acid burn from some offending food. I believe it's only the poo that's the culprit, not the pee. The official name is "scalding."
Carla 01-08-2006, 11:19 PM Okay, I checked out the rash picts on askdrsears.com, and one part of the rash is definitely a yeast rash. So I started putting monistat cream on it and it is getting much better already. I do give her multidophilus but sometimes forget with all her other meds...maybe being more consistent will help! As far as this mysterious poop, I like the idea of keeping a journal because it is definitely one that has something different about it. It is not the normal poop smell and is very runny and green and I forgot to say grainy--like it cleaned out her whole intestine. After her 2nd fundo, she had dumping syndrome for awhile and shortly after we finally figured out she was allergic to milk and soy. That was all she was living on after her fundo as it was a liquid only diet for a month. This poop I am talking about resembles the smell and color of the dumping poop and the allergic reaction to milk and soy poop, except it isn't immediately following a food or drink. Since it is commonly in the am, I wonder if it is on eof her night meds causing it.
I do know that she does it after she wakes, she never has poop when she greets first thing in the morning. She usually keeps her jammies and pull up on until after breakfast and it happen somewhere around there. If she is in underwear though, she has an accident. I doesn't seem to be one she controls very well, probably because it is runny. It will be on her skin for minutes max, and the whole area is bright bright red and painful--and the grainy is so hard to get off, I have to put her in the tub. Today t wasn't in the morning though, it was late afternoon. I will keep a diary of what she is eating. She does have accidents often with normal formed poop and the smell is definitely different and her skin does not turn red. Maybe it is something else she isn't tolerating. Thanks for the tips!:-D
Leigh 01-09-2006, 07:52 PM If you find out what that grainy stool is be sure to let me know! My son has produced a stool like that for over two years now and my ped is convinced it is a gluten intolerance or celiac. I am not so sure. My GI says it is old stool perculating through the intestines and that is why it is so foul. Your description is what we go through with Curran. The "burns" happen when it is particularly liquidy. Big Yuck. We are doing food elimination diets now and hope to find a food cause for it, otherwise we wait for our new GI in Sept to help us.
Glad to hear that the infection is clearing up. Yeast infections are so nasty. I do not recall my firstborn ever having one, but Curran and Iain have had a ton of them. I will have to remind them when they are older how much feminine product they needed!
