my son had an upper GI done a month ago and he doesn't have reflux from the what the test said. but what worries me is that he is spitting up/and waking up from nap with formula in his hair and on sheets etc. he will spit up bad right after he eats too. He is at the point where he gags on infant cereal, and some babyfood and the tablefood he is trying to get used to.. hes 10 1/2 months. i give him between 28-32 ounces a day if he isn't taking in babyfood but i try to do my best with the tablefood/babyfood. but is there another reason besides reflux that can cause him to spit-up/possible throw up? i don't know what is going on what it could be if it's not reflux.

Is he on meds at all? If so, what ones and what is his dose? Also, how long has he been on them?

Does he do any texture foods at all? Has he seen ENT?

I would not worry about the test not showing reflux. Many here have had the test done and to no avail.

There are other things, but what has your ped or GI looked in to thus far?

Do you prop the bed? Thicken?

What are your concerns? An upper GI is not 100%. You have to do the GI when the baby is having a bout of reflux to catch it "on tape". Reflux is unpredictable and some could have problems with it at noon and at three you seem do be doing fine. Is it the texture issues that you are concerned about? I would definatly talk with the doc about the choking on foods he should be use to by now. Is he a mouthy baby? (ie: puts toys, passy, fingers in his mouth)?

Nicole my name is Sue, nice to meet you.

Nicole ny son has silent reflux so I can't help you with the puke but Sue is rgiht. Upper GI's aren't an accurate detemination of reflux. If they aren't refluxing DURING the test it wont show up

thanks for responses. i was worried more about him throwing up/spitting up and not eating the tablefood gagging etc, yes he puts his fingers in his mouth and his toys etc. i didn't know about the upper GI that he still may have reflux even though it doesn't show up on the test. No one really told me that. the doctor sent him to to gastro pedi and he is now going to a dev pedi about sensory issues on the 18th. he hates loud noises but is doing better with that now. he hates sitting would rather be on tummy and would scream when i use to sit him up now he just sits forward holding onto his legs and quickly goes to his tummy. the doc has him on pepcid but had him on zantac for awhile but told us to stop the zantac.

Evan didn't vomit during his upper GI, so the test was useless. He had a major reflux in the waiting room just after though. Even once he started being medicated at 19 months, he still vomited at night, and he still does sometimes, even though he's elevated.

The upper GI is not good for an accurate diagnosis of refluxing. Your child sounds like he could be refluxing. The test probably just didn't catch it.

thanks for responses. yes he spits up all the time and it get's so bad i smell it in his crib after he naps it's usually in his hair or whatever. now since he turned 10 months he is taking about 6 ounces with some cereal and fruit but it's hard to get that food in him. he will eat like 3 cheerios when i offer that food he hates all kinds of food like i give him applesauce he hates it i give him chicken he eats some and gags at times and same with other things like veggies. he gags on mashed potatoes. i just worry he isn't taking enough food. he goes back feb 10th for a follow-up so i am mentioning all this to doc. it's frusterating i have a special-needs child who may be autistic plus a child with reflux most likely. do kids with reflux suffer from sensory problems?

another thing my hubby said was when he went in room with my son they were glad he had nothing to eat prior cause the gastro said to make sure he doesnt eat 4 hours prior and he went to get test when he got up in the morning, would that mean he can't reflux if he had nothing to eat right? well they said it was good he had nothing to eat for the test. i just don't know what to do.

My little guy went in on an empty stomach too, but it is possible to vomit from the barium, as Evan had major puke right after.

We're hoping to start a new forum for parents of special needs kids, and there is at least one mom of an autistic child who is planning on participating. We'd love to hear more about your special needs child!

And yes, many kids with reflux do have sensory issues. There's a forum about that here too, including info. about where to find a sensory checklist.

As far as I've been told by our doctors, an upper GI is NOT a diagnostic test. Its used to rule out anatomical abnormalities so that something isn't being missed and treated as reflux instead. I don't think Noah refluxed at all during his, but his doctors never doubted that it was reflux.
