Does anyone know about thickeners besides rice or oatmeal. I have tried both but the breast milk breaks it down so that half way into her bottle it is too runny. I have tried making up one ounce at a time but it is just too difficult. Any other thickeners that work well?

There are commercial thickeners including Thick-it, Thick and Easy and Simply Thick but they do not have anywhere near the calories as cereal. You may find Thick-it in your local drug store but you may need to contact the manufactors of the others. Breastmilk will always breakdown cereal when it is added in large amounts. It is better to mix 2 ounces of breastmilk and cereal at a time.

I already fortify her expressed breast milk with nutramigen and oil to 27 cal/oz. I'm worried that the added oatmeal might slow down her emptying even more. What do you think? So I wanted to thicken it with something else that is easily digestable.

We thicken our formula with barley cereal as the rice made Sam so constipated and the oatmeal makes him stink. I have to add more than I would if I used rice cereal, but it works the same. I don't know much about thickeners so I am not much help. Sorry!
