Curran had yet another blowout yesterday requiring a shower and me nearly throwing his clothes in the garbage as they reeked so bad. He had not gone for a poop in a long time again. As my ped wishes, I am not giving him the lactulose. In fact, I will be bypassing my GI appointment for Curran tomorrow until I can get to see my ped and figure out what the game plan is.

My question is your experiences with MOM. How long did you use it, how did it work, was it beneficial, etc. Maggie suggested using it and as I see so many who have I figure it is worth investigating.

Thanks!

I know nothing about MOM. Just wanted to give my sympathies on the yucky laundry and having to hose off the boy.

From what I know, it is SAFE, gentle, and always effective. According to my doctor, one cannot become immune to it as with other laxatives. It can be used in a large dose to really get things moving, or you could give a small dose to him every day for consistency. It works best if given right before bed with a large glass of water.

My non-refluxer had some contispation issues when switching from formula to milk and then became a stool holder. MOM was the only thing that helped and Maggie is right she never became dependent and we used as much or as little as we needed. She took it for over a year and now has no issues with holding or contispation.

Emma's bowel issues were CURED with MOM. She has had 1-2 bowel movements, (think applesauce texture), per day...(the only time she has been constipated when she was on MOM was when Mommy gave her YoBaby for a week....oops....she is very much dairy intolerant). You probably know about her issues beforehand. Nothing worked, even prescription meds like Lactulose.

MOM was "prescribed" by our GI. and I ditto everything Maggie said. No cramping, no gas/bloating, and no dependece on the drug will happen.

The only thing about MOM is it is not supposed to be given 2 hours before or 2 hours after a medicine b/c it interferes with absorption. And, it has to be taken with a large amount of liquid to help it work.

So, that means I can't give it in the morning b/c she takes Prevacid. I can't give it to her midday...it was causing her to have bowel movements at night = NOT going to happen...Emma has enough sleep issues. So, the only time I can give it is in her nighttime bottle....2 hours at least after her Zantac at bedtime.

Doing this, by giving it to her when she nightfeeds that one time....is working perfectly. She usually has a bowel movement after each nap.

I love MOM and I will forever adore my GI for telling us to switch Emma from Lactulose to MOM.

It's great!

I just wanted to add that taking it with liquid is SO important. "This girl I know" has some serious digestion problems, and "she" has to take it every few days, but it does not work nearly as well unless "she" remembers to drink that enormous glass of water with it.

*LOL* Nice, Maggie. I sure hope your "friend" doesn't read your post and figure out who "she" is!

On a more serious note, Bethy was put on MOM awhile back (we tried a long lineup of meds to induce poops) and it didn't work for us; however, I should tell you that, as Maggie said, it is important to drink fluids with it and my dd limits her fluid intake from a cup, but does nurse like a champ. Perhaps it didn't work for us b/c she didn't drink enough...?

Thanks everyone. I will be buying some this weekend. We are at our wits end regarding Curran's poop issues and are making some drastic changes here.

MOM worked wonders for Jaxon who was alway constantly consipated... We were on Lactulose and other stuff and none of those worked at all for him... But MOM now that works...

Good Luck

I am a moron. The ped returned my call today and I covered everything with her but the MOM. ARG. She said again not to go back to lactulose, ignore my ex-GI and give mineral oil if he does not poop. It was at the end of the conversation, so I forgot as I was juggling information for two kids.

Anyway, I still have to get some MOM and will give it a go. It can not hurt and we have a ped appointment for full check ups on two younger in about two weeks.

Thanks so much for all the information everyone! I look forward to seeing how it works.

**oh, please let it work!**

Does MOM work to help soften the stool? Now that Gabby feeds more orally she cries some times when she is pooping. I know that them pushing is normal but the crying is not. How much would I be able to give her?

Hold old is she and how much does she weigh? The dosage goes by age, but it does make a bit of a diff if your kiddo is big or small.

I just bought it tonight, so I can look on the bottle for you.
