My 3 month old has been taking prevacid for about a month now. he always takes in the morning and it seems like the last few nights it has been wearing off??? around like 9 or 10 he'll start arching his back and spitting up and burping and crying and he was not doing this before. is it possible that his dosage needs adjusted? i'm calling the doctor tomarrow but I figured since almost everyone on here has been through this maybe you guys could shed some light on the subject for me.

thanks,
meg

Could need an increase, or maybe split the dose--1/2 in am and 1/2 in pm and see if that helps

HOw much is he on? Evan has always needed 15mg and our old GI was adamant about him getting 1/2 in the morning and 1/2 at night b/c meds metabolize so fast in smal children.

I agree - try splitting his dose. We also use Maalox when he is having a bad episode.

We had to increase Joshua's dose at 4 months. His Dr. said that reflux tends to peak between 4-6 months. Maybe your little one is peaking early?

well he is on the solutabs and he is only taking half a pill now so i do not know how i would split that again as it crubles as is when split. lol

The jump from 15mg to 30mg usually requires an enormous weight gain. 30mg is an adult dose and is rarely given to infants/young children according to our GI. 15mg is the standard infant/child dose. It is typically split into two 7.5mg doses given 12 hours apart because children generally have hummingbird metabolisms.

thanks at least now when i call the doctor tomarrow i pretty much know what she should say. from the sounds of it i should give him half in the am and then half 12 hours later then he would be getting the whole 15mg. but we will see what the doctor says. thanks guys :)

The very same thing happened when my little girl was about 2 1/2 months old. The doctor had us up her dose of Prevacid to a 1/2 solutab in the am and a 1/4 tab at night. This was a pain to do, but worked for a while. We eventually had to up it to 1/2 in am and pm, but they wouldn't let us do this until after she was over 12 lbs. Splitting the whole dose really does seem to help my little girl sleep much better at night. I hope it works for your little guy!

Hmmm...My dd is older (13.5 mos) and I noticed something similar at bedtime. Her GI told us to take the full dose of Prevacid (15 mg) in the morning, then to give Zantac at night. Ask your doctor if something like this might be helpful (Zantac, Maalox, Mylanta, etc.) at bedtime.

Good luck!!

Just got off the phone with the dr. we are going to have to use the horible zantac agian :( he hates that stuff! the dr. said to still do the prevacid in the am and then at night before bed 1ml of zantac. Hopefully this works because I hate giving him that horrible stuff especially because before it did not work for him. But only time will tell. Just thought I would let you guys know what the dr. said.

I hope the Zantac works, Meg. If you do end up having to split the Prevacid dose for am and pm, it is doable. We quartered the solutabs by using a pill cutter, and it actually worked pretty well.

Hope the Zantac helps!

Meg - is Ethan a bottle or breast fed baby? Joshua is a bottle fed baby and we were able to put the Zantac in with his formula. That way, he didn't really taste it.

Another idea - our pharmacy, Walgreens, can add flavoring to syrups. Not sure if little ones can have it or not. I never really checked in to it but have seen it advertised.

Keep up posted!

Thanks a ton for the suggetions we are bottle fed now :( I was breastfeeding but due to all the stress of the hospital stay my milk stopped coming in :( I will try mixing it in the formula and I will also talk to the pharmacist because I know they have the flavorings they have a big sign for them I just didn't think any flavor would cover up that horible peppermint lol

Good luck with the Zantac, Meg! Maybe the two meds together will do the trick! Noah takes three 1/2 solutabs per day. I'm thinking of asking for Zantac in addition, also...

We flavored it with grape, and then added it to one ounce of formula, that way, we knew he would finish that small amount and not miss any of the meds. BUT, there are some on here that have been told by their doctors/pharmacists that the flavoring can mess with the stability of the Zantac, so that's worth investigating as well.

I know! I can't seem to comprehend why they would make the flavor so nasty!! I've even emailed the Zantac folks to tell them about it, with no response, of course. Luckily, Joshua isn't on the stuff anymore...

yeah its horible and I have no clue why on earth they would flavor something that strongly for infants it just boggles my mind. I know when ethan was on it before it was horible we had to fight to get him to take it and then he would either spit it out or gag until he threw it up :( so I talked to the pharmacist today and they said that they can only flavor it with grape which is fine because he likes grape tylnol so hopefully he'll like this grape too. They also said that they were not aware of flavoring affecting the stability of the zantac so hopefully it works :::crosses fingers:::::

Can't be of much help with the Prevacid but just wanted to say what a cutie your little guy is!!!

After reading several discussions about Prevacid I decided to also split the solutab in half. I usually give him half at 8 am and then around 8 pm. I think it has helped a little. My little guy is almost 14 pounds. I wanted to call to see if I can give him 22.5 on his really really bad days. I'm going to call tomorrow and see what the GIs have to say. Good luck with your little man. He is so very cute!

Hi!
I have a four month old daughter with silent acid reflux - I think his meds definitely need to be increased. My daugher is on prevacid granules and started out at 1/2 packet. At three months, she started to arch her back again, cry after bottles, etc. We were told to up her meds to one full packet - 1/2 in the am, 1/2 in the pm. We were told that prevacid only lasts about 12 hours in a babies system. As babies enter the 3-6 month age, reflux can increase calling for an increase in meds. We have had success in splitting the dosage because that way it is in her system all the time. Hope this helps!

Thanks everyone :) the dr. wants us to try using zantac at night and the prevacid still in the morning and see how that works if in a week he is still having problems then they will up the prevacid to 1/2 a solutab in the am and 1/2 in the evening. so we will see we've done 2 nites with the zantac so far and it suprisingly wasn't that hard to get him to take it ( I think that was only becuase of the element of surprise in that he hasn't had to have it in so long that he forgot about it so I can sneak it on him if I'm quick). I have a feeling tho that we will end up using more prevacid because the zantac did NOTHING for him before but I'm crossing my fingers that something works and the lil guy gets some relief Today was pretty rough he wouldn't let me put him down at all. When ever he is having a really bad day he won't go to anyone but me so I spent all day holding the lil screaming guy he'd finally wear himself out and fall asleep on my chest but I couldnt' put him down. However he is asleep now in his amby bed so hopefully he will get some rest.
