Just wanted to see what formulas are mostly used/ best tolerated by refluxers. We have been through a few formulas with Jeremy and are now on Nutramigen (have been for almost 2 weeks now). It doesn't seem to be helping. Actually he seems worse on it as he hates the taste so doesn't want his bottle past the initial hunger stage. The ped recommended that we stay on it as it is the easiest to digest but I wonder why as he doesn't have any proven allergies and still has reflux on this formula so I don't think his reflux is really allergy related.
I saw that a lot of babies on this site are on hypoallergenic formulas so maybe there's a reason other than allergies I am missing?

Hypoallergenic formula is used with a lot of refluxers because it's pre-digested and therefore passes through the stomach more rapidly.

Catherine was breastfed (barely) her first two weeks and then on Alimentum for 24/7 screaming and not pooping for 10 days. It was wonderful for her. At 9mo or so, when her RAST testing showed no milk or soy allergies, we switched her to milk-based formula. At that point, she started shrieking at the drop of a hat and her already deplorable sleep habits took a nosedive. She's been on soy for about two weeks now and while it's improved the screaming and sleeping somewhat, she's constipated on it. I have a feeling we'll be back on Alimentum after her GI appt this week.

Cady's been on GoodStart since she was 4 weeks old as a supplement to breastfeeding, then fed exclusively pumped milk until ten weeks, then back to Good Start full-time at 10 weeks old. At around three months, we experimented with various other formulas. Once we had her on Enfamil AR and she had constipation and delayed emptying problems, so the GI put her back on GoodStart. Turns out that the GoodStart has proteins that are more broken down that other formulas, but not nearly as broken down as Nuramigen or other hypo formulas. For us, it's always done the trick. But, no formula, not a single formula stopped her spitting up, except when it was thickened.

I've been through the whole list, but nothing made any difference here.

Maya was initially breast feed and I stopped breast feeding before reflux was diagnosed because she was not putting on any weight. We went on regular formula then and she took around 20oz a day. We took Neocate and Maya did not mind it at first, but what you described, she only feed when absolutely necessary and then totally rejected it to the point of 8-9 oz a day. The GI then put her on a high calorie milk based formula, when it became obvious that a hypoallergenic forumla had not helped after 2 weeks of hell. She has done much better on this formula and is putting on weight although she does still have days where there is some bottle rejection. I think that GIs may be a bit over zealous in assuming that most kids have allergies when they do not necessarily have them. There are consequences of a hypo allergenic formula in taste issues and also when it comes to weaning. I can now as I am very very lazy pick the milk based solids in jars which I used for my non gerdling which are high calories. Otherwise I would be left with the vegetables and fruit which are less palatable and low in calories.

A key element for Maya is to get the precise level of thickening and this can involve a lot of exprimentation with teats and thickeners..
