I think Sarah's DGE is bothering her. She never really gets hungry. She is on erythromycin. What meds have worked well for you?

We used erythromyicin and Bethanechol, both are supposed to be good alternatives to reglan. I don't think they helped but then again, we found out that Elis emptying problem was due to a malformation, which may be why it didn't help him. His pylorus was attached to his liver so they had to scrape it off.

According to studies and our GI most motility drugs are not proven to be effective and have marginal efficiency. The only proven drug cisapride has been banned in the UK as it can cause heart problems in some people. Maya is on motilium. We are not sure if it helped her and took her off it and she began refusing the bottles at some feeds a week later. We put her back on it yesterday and she seems a bit better, but whether or not this is the drug working I do not know!

Catherine was on Bethanecol for about 5 months. It did nothing for her. One of the problems with these motility drugs is that you're relying on the presence of a side effect to improve motility. All these drugs are really to treat other problems. And as we know, side effects are not present in all people. In some kids, however, they seem to do a world of good.

My son has been on reglan, eyrthromycin, propulsid(cisapride). He is now on domperdione which is not approved in the US but can be given by certain docs. I do also know that some docs are able to get permission to use propulsid which did really help my son until it was taken off the market.

The hardest part of dge is trying to treat it because there are not many meds out there to fix it. And the ones out there are not that great and really dont work. I do wish you luck.

my son was on propulsid (cisapride)for 4 years (until it was removed from the market) with very little effect. He now uses metaclopromide (reglan) with awesome success as far as digestions is concerned. He has suffered no side effects except excessive hunger which resulted in obesity within 6 months of beginning its use.

We used erytthromycin with luck. It took about two weeks to see definite results. :)

Isn't domperidone the same as reglan????

Good question Carla here's some info -
"Reglan is a prescription drug that can help women increase their milk supplies.

Metoclopramide (Reglan™, Maxeran™) is an older medication that is known to increase milk production, but it has frequent side effects which have made its use for many nursing mothers unacceptable (fatigue, irritability, depression). A alternative is domperidone (Motilium™), which has many fewer side effects because it does not enter the brain tissue in significant amounts (does not pass the blood-brain barrier)."

I saw on a web page that they were the same. So glad you cleared that up. Have you ever tried Motilium for Noah? What do you think about me trying it for my milk supply and for Gavin trying it for DGE?

We've had absolutely no problems with domperidone (motilium), Carla. If you're in the States (sorry, I forget where you live and it's not posted under your name), it's pretty hard to come by though.

For Sarah the reglan doesn't seem to do anything. We definitely saw some improvement with the erythromycin but I think she DGE is still bothering her. So we are looking for something to add to the erythromycin adn stopping the reglan.

We're now using erythromycin, but effectiveness is marginal and Maya seems to have a lot of cramping with it. We can't use Reglan. Propulsid is out because of her heart defect (she wouldn't get approved for the limited access program). Her gi doesn't use dom. Thinking about trying Zelnorm next.

Carla, I would ask Grant for some of the Reglan for you and try that or the other one both should help increase your milk supply.
