Does anyone know what the rate of emptying should be when a baby eats solids? Noah spits up a few times a day. Usually it isnt too bad. He eats every 3 hours (4 oz bottles) and I try to get 2 to 3 oz of solids in him in between his bottles. Tonight he had a bottle at 5:00. Then at 7:00 he had 2.5 oz of sweet potatoes. Then a bottle at 8:00. He spit up milk at 10:30 and it was colored orange from the sweet potatoes. He only spit up a little more than a teaspoon. But I was wondering if it is normal to still have enough sweet potato in his belly to make the spit up orangish? Does this sound normal or maybe dge?

if he is vomiting from a meal 2 hours or more afterwards it could indicate a problem, probably not, but it could be.

That's what I was thinking too, Erin. Not quite sure, especially since there's hardly any sweet potato in it.

He isnt vomiting, its just spit up (orange colored curtled milk). And I forgot to mention that I added about a half teaspoon of butter and 1/2 scoop of formula to the potatos to add extra calories. Wouldnt the extra fat and calories make it take longer to digest?

Hmm, I am not sure, you may want to ask your ped about it. I do believe that it could indicate DGE but since he is so little I don't know. Our son had severe DGE. Spit up or vomit won't make a difference, the problem is how long it stays in the tummy after eating.

Lisa,
The added fat, especially at such a young age, could also cause more spit up, I would think.
