During the last month, Noah's sleeping has become a real issue. He naps twice a day for about 2 hours each...its great. At night, he wakes every hour or so and eventually will not be put back into his crib. He USED to sleep so soundly on top of me on the couch. Now, when he does sleep, he tosses and twitches and turns all night. He'll appear asleep through most of it, but its really hard to sleep as he wiggles around all night. I can't imagine that he is comfortable, since it will eventually wake him and he will cry loudly and frantically. Is this reflux? He used to do some arching and grunting in his sleep before we elevated, but that improved immediately thanks to the carseat. At first, I thought the sleep problems might be related to him forming a habit when he was having all of the gas issues the last few weeks, but now, I'm sure there is something going on as he sleeps. What do you think? How can I calm him to sleep peacefully? :???:

Hey Maggie, merry christmas.
I have the same problem with Parker and its the reason I cant co-sleep, cause it keeps me up cause I know he is in pain and squirming and there is nothing I can do.
He is a lot better now but I can still hear him on the moniter squirming and making pain sounds but he does re-settle himself now, which is good because if I go in there there is no way I can get him to sleep.

I now put on music and now he is used to it and settles. Also if I go in there I will sit on a chair and talk to him, I do not pick him up- but is a lot older than Noah- and he is getting good with this.

Also if he uses a pacifier I have about 5 in there so if he wakes for it it is easy for him to find one.

Good luck, the good news is that Parker didn't grow out of the squirming but does re-settle himself

First off I am soooo jealous of the naps. PJ does NOT nap well - 45 min tops. Usually awake after 30! So congratulations. But that wasn't the post so.......

PJ did that for a long time - probably 6 weeks and I could hear him squirming, pounding his legs on the mattress, his hands, his head.......He is a noisy sleeper. Not to mention all the reflux noises. Also a reason he couldn't be in the same room as us. He would keep me awake all night and I have never gotten used to it. I can even hear him through the wall. Which is how I know it just recently got better. He is sleeping a lot more soundly in the past 2 weeks.

This seemed to be the time I took the pacifier away. Most of his wake ups were looking for the pacifier and he is too young to get it back in his mouth.

Does Noah use a pacifier to sleep? Just a thought. For us it completely interrupetd PJ sleep. He has improved greatly, still not a great sleeper, but much much better.

Hmmm, I suppose he could be experiencing some reflux symptoms if it has just started happening or it could be anthing, hard to tell  When E would start having trouble sleeping again, we quickly learned to look into the reflux meds and growth and all that to see if he needed any adjusting. Have you tried giving him a bit of mylanta before bed? If it helps maybe you will know its reflux, if not then maybe its teething or something?

My Noah tosses and turns at night whenever his reflux is acting up more than usual. It breaks my heart, he will change positions constnatly like a motor is running him in his sleep. He always ends up waking up crying each & every night it seems, saying his throat is on fire. All three of my other children sleep in pretty much the same position all night long so I am convinced that Noah is uncomfortable. Like Erin says I would look into your Noah's meds maybe it's time to change the dosage, or maybe just the time it's given.

Bethany, the queen of the nighttime wakeup, does this a lot--tossing, turning, grunting, waking up screaming every hour...I hate to always read into it, but it sure seems like a GERD-related issue to me.

Giving Zantac before bedtime helps a little (that is, when I can actually get it down her gullet!). I was giving Mylanta; however, I found that in her case, it wore off after a couple of hours.

Also, because she's already prone to night wakings, I keep a CD player in her room and play a lullaby on low volume anytime she's asleep in there. (Just be sure to hit "repeat" so the CD continuously loops). It helps protect against waking up due to street noise.

Ugh--good luck. Sleep issues are no fun. :-(

Mary, we just started playing classical music in his room last night, and we DID forget to press repeat, and he woke shortly after it stopped playing. I learned my lesson, though. He's napping to Baby Einstein Musicbox Orchestra now, and its definitely on repeat! (I need to pick up a more relaxing CD, since all of his are quite energetic.) They still seem to do the trick, though!

I'm glad you found something that worked, Maggie. We've been down the music road unsuccessfully with several different genre. Catherine has been shrieking in her bed for a good 30 minutes now. I'm surprised you can't hear her. She can sleep or she can stay in there and scream -- she's not coming out for another 90 minutes. I'm going to go sit outside in the 83 degree sun and read.

You go, Lesley! Sounds like what I had to do with Kaylin. Sleep or no, I'm taking a break.

She finally conked out. Part of her problem was squeezing out another round of rabbit pellets. I change her, she screamed another good 15-20 minutes and fell asleep. Next to naked (diaper only), windows open, ceiling fan slowly circulating ... what more could any baby want to sleep? :)
