I tasted the zantac and it tastes awful -- no wonder my ds won't take it! Anything to do to make it taste better???

Parker used to hate it, he would scream and spitit up, if we layed him down it used to run in his eyes and then you don't even know what dose he had! I haven't tried anything to make it tase better- he now likes it- very strange baby I have.

we had the same problem with Zantac. The only way we could get it to him is if we put it in a cup with a little liquid, our GI said it was OK our Pharmacist says it wasn't. We ended up switching though as it made things worse for him anyway.

You can have the pharmacist flavor it, which does not take the alcohol or strong peppermint away but it is a little better. Most places will only flavor it in Grape like it says in their book but other places will try other flavors if you ask. We did cherry and it was ok.

However the more you give it to them the more they get used to it and like it.

Now I was told to put it in the formula, no matter how much formula (as long as they drink every bit of forumla so they get all the meds), because the Zantac will not mix with it. It's kinda like oil and water. I put my daughters in her 5-6oz bottles and she actually prefers the "minty" bottles to the plain ones now. She has never had an issue.

Hope that helps! :)

Its true the zantac wont mix with the formula...but its best to give it without food so it can work better. There is a sticky called when to give meds or something close to that , that explains why meds should be given without food...although of course that is only possible sometimes and you have to do whatever works to actually get the meds in them in the first place.

Please be careful with flavourings. Maiya loved the taste of zantac (go figure) but it did not work for her. She hates losec. The pharmacist i used to go to could only flavour it with cherry- which she hated. I later found out they were making the losec completely inactive. There were 42 possible flavours (called flavorx) and out of the 42, only 2 could be used on losec (bubblegum and grape). I emailed the flavourx guys to find out and they told me this. I finally found a pharmacy that knew what they were talking about and gave me the grape, bubble gum truth.

They were very helpful and now, my losec is not being ruined with acidic flavoring that ruins my meds.

I am not sure if zantac would be affected, but email them and they will tell you.

good luck

I also learned, from this site, that if i give it in a small syringe, on the side of her tongue, right beside her tongue and not in the cheek, way in the back of her mouth, she cant spit it out and does not taste it as much.

Tha ttrick has been my saving grace with the losec

Zantac does taste dreadful. Prilosec isn't the best either... I used to put his prilosec into an ounce of formula (pharmacist was ok with this). Of course, we're on capsules now, mixed with food and it's much easier.
I thought cherry was a standard flavour they used with zantac...... Definitely talk with your pharmacist about it. Good luck!

thank you, thank you, thank you!
You all are so helpful and I really appreciate it!
I have e-mailed flavorx and I am anxious to hear what they say!

DS was on zantac for a while, he didn't mind the taste, but it did nothing for him. What I never could figure out is if "minty" flavors aggravate gerd as I have read and dh can agrees (he takes prilosec once a day himself), then why in the world would they flavor a gerd medicine w/ peppermint?

It is not flavored that way... the way the med is manufactured and put together it comes out a strong peppermint flavor... kinda like strong peppermint schnapps! lol

Hi we put Connor's Zantac in about 1/2 oz of formula and he takes it just fine! I usually just use enough formula to cover the bottom of the bottle! Our GI and our Pharmacist said this was fine as long as he drinks it all. Connor is a major gagger when it comes to meds I even have to give him tylenol in formula or he'll puke!

We had it flavored grape on top of the mint flavor that it came as. Noah still wouldn't get it all down, so we started adding it to 1-2 ounces of formula. My ped okayed this, as long as I made sure that he drank all of it at once, which was NOT always possible. If you don't want to flavor it since it seems like it is a common idea that it tampers with the meds, you might try squirting it into the back of his mouth, then quickly plugging a paci or bottle of formula or juice in his mouth. We did this for a while before we had it flavored and it helped to some degree. Good luck. Administering Zantac caused h*ll in our household. I was so happy to switch to Prilosec.

Oh yes. I forgot the trick we still use today to give meds. I know it has not worked for some, but I highly suggest you try it, as it saved us so much frustration. Stick your finger between his gums so that he cannot bite down. Squirt the meds to the back corner, as far as you can get them. DO NOT ALLOW him to close his mouth until he has swallowed. This keeps him from being able to push the meds out with his tongue by pressing his mouth shut. I only give Noah 2 mL at a time this way so that he does not choke. It was a brilliant discovery for us! Also, a good distraction (quacking and dancing father, perhaps) above him while you do it is great. Noah is so into watching him, that he swallows willingly (most of the time) without even noticing it.

The manufacturer of Zantac has finally responded to all the parent
complaints about the alcohol and peppermint in their pediatric syrup. They
released a tablet with no alcohol that is citrus flavored. Tablets
must dissolved in a tiny bit of water. Zantac Efferdose comes in 25 mg
tablets in individual foil packets. The medicine is approved for age 1
month and up.

To find a pharmacy that carries the Efferdose formulation, call the
GlaxoSmithKline Response Center at 888-825-5249

Thanks for the info!!!

As for my response...B takes Zantac b/f bedtime and it is a true fight to get it down her. She's old enough now to bat the syringe away and/or spit it back out at me. It truly is AWFUL tasting stuff and I have been told by both my GI and pharmacist that flavoring the syrup somehow negatively affects its ability to stem the reflux. :-(

I'm going to talk to my GI about trying the tablets; however, I wonder what they use as filler? Bethany has a HORRIBLE dairy aversion and had to go off Prevacid solutabs b/c of a trace amount of dairy solids used as filler. :-(

I get my Efferdose filled at Target. They are the only pharmacy in my area that carries it.
