Tavin had his Fundo on an emergency basis because he had a life threatining aspiration pneumonia event on Dec 4. We were just released yesterday. His fundo and mickey button were done the 19th. When the surgeon got in there he found Tavin had hiatal hernia and his esophigitis was so severe the inflamation was on the outside of his esophagus. He is doing ok, but very very tired.

The doctors are always saying watch for feeding intolerance, well what do I look for? In the hospital they started his feeds slowly and worked up to 240 ml, but once they got up to 240ml Tavin exploded. He pooped explosively and it smelled like vomit. They sent us home anyway. Well every time I feed him he does the same thing. He cannot even pass gas without pooping. I am worried that he is not digesting and absorbing the nutrients. He is not allowed anything by mouth for 6 weeks. He is on six 240ml bolus feeds per day of pregestimil. Which is our 4th formula we have tried. We have never had normal stools, but now they smell like vomit...ugh! Does this sound like feeding tube intolerance or formula?

((((hugs)))) our son had the fundo without a button placed. Things should get better for you around 6 weeks, hang in there!!! When you have surgery on the GI system it takes a while for it to even out and with the fundo and feeds he may be having some gas bloat problems. The fundo will swell more so over time and it may get a little more difficult before it gets better. But, it does get better! Hang in there!! PM me if I can help you with any more Qs. In the fundo section there are some moms who have had fundos with buttons placed at the same time. They may have more info for you! I am sure they frequent in here too.

I would give him some time to adjust. Maybe try a smaller volume or a slower rate. sam will only tolerate 200cc over an hour--any faster and he wretches. When Sam gets too much volume he will get fussy and sweaty. Sam is on Alimentium and his poop is very stinky. when he poops, is he sweaty and does he sleep right after??? A side effect of the fundo is dumping syndrome. sorry I do not have time to write more--the boys are back from the mall with dinner--please feel free to PM me with any questions---Good Luck!

Wow !! Okay, I am by no way an expert but, that seems like an awful large bolus for such a little guy especially right after surgery. Noah never tolerated any type of bolus feeds until several weeks afte rhis fundo surgeries. I would find out about running im on a slow continous rate. That way even though he may still have the explosive poop,, (which can happen after a fundo ) The poops should slow doen in a few weeks but, in the mean time I would be more worried (Noah always had such a hard time) about keeping him hydrated and with the loose stools he's loosing more moisture than nutrients and he needs the hydration to help him heal better and it also helps the pain be more manageable with proper hydration. Good Luck !!! I know it can all be very over whelming !!

I agree, I think the 240ml is too much for him. Heck, he never took that much from a bottle. Up until the surgery the most we could get him to take is 3 oz and that was a struggle. He is now FTT so they are really pushing him. I have slowed him down to 4oz at a time and he does better, although it still goes straight through him.

Thank you all for the poopy input!

Noah became FTT right after his 1st surgery. Have the Dr.s given you a pump ? Maybe he needs really slow continuos feeds over the day and night the slower the feed the slower the poop will get.

Yes we have a pump. I think you are right. He was on continuous feeds with his NJ. There is no reason we can't do continuous with the G tube.

The other question I have is, I am suppose to vent him (or burp him) after his feeds, but when I do everything he just got in comes out. Is this normal? And if I start continuous when do I vent him?

No, I did not get much support from the hospital. :smt076 As soon as they got to one 8oz feed in him they literally threw us out. I am still very uncomfortable with this and I do not feel like he was well enough to come home. He has not even cried one time since he has been home. :sad1:
