We were switched from Prevacid 7.5 mg once a day to Zantac 0.8 ml three times a day.
I feel like that is a step down instead of a step up. We need a step up. I asked the dr if we could do the prevacid in the am and the pm and instead she switched his medication and is sending us to a gi.
My question is this....I hate to even admit I am considering this, but do you think that I could ahead and give him the prevacid in the am and pm equallign 15 mg a day (he weighs 11 pounds and I have heard of a lot of other people with children this size take that much)? Or should I try the zantac? Or should I just stick with the prevacid in the am?
I know that we are not doctors, but I would really appreciate any and all thoughts on this.
Thanks!

I would try the Zantac, we made the same switch and it was fine for us. The Prevacid wasnt doing what we needed it to so we tried the Zantac and it's been great as long as we keep up with my dd's weight gain. Give it a good two weeks before you say it doesnt work. Then talk to the GI about what to do then! :)

Good luck!

I'd try the Zantac also. It's been a miracle drug for us. I wouldn't up a dose of Prevacid w/o the drs. recommendation

We are on zantac and on the right dose it is amazing. We were on prevacid 15mg (at 9.5kk)and it was the worst 8 days ever- maybe we should have waited longer but it was unbearable. Try the zantac.

We originally could only use the zantac due to Iain being food averted so severely. The dose kept increasing and we always have to have him at the max. It was our first miracle drug as it was the one that got him to open his mouth for food for the first time (he started solids at 14 months of age). We just started prevacid again (first trial did not work due to gastro issues and food aversion, not swallowing, etc.) and it is clearly the hands down winner for us.

Having said that, whatever works is the best. Both drugs have a function, they just approach the situation from a different standpoint. Some kids do fine on zantac, others need the PPI. Iain and Curran are actually taking BOTH zantac and prevacid. The prevacid is used in the morning and although I have the option of using the zantac in the morning and evening, I usually just use it in the evening unless it is a very refluxy day. My prevacid doses are set and I do not play with them. However, my ped has given me a range of amounts, a safe zone if you will of what we can give Iain for zantac. This freedom to chose and play around with the dose has saved much time running back and forth.

Here is the link for the meds and what they do:

Do not think of it as a step backwards. It is a trial and that is all. One thing I do wish to caution you is that zantac does often "time out" or lose effectiveness over time, so be aware of it.

Whatever works is the best, right?:xmas1:
