I would really like to know if my ped is correct in presuming that a kiddo with reflux can have many issues with recurring pneumonia. Curran is on bout number three with it this year and he just turned 4. He has had it prior, but not 3 times in a year.

Trey had several bouts as an infant. Catherine has had none but it's been suspected a few times and then ruled out by chest x-ray.

:???: Yes, Yes, Yes, it is common if your child aspirates or refluxes high. This was the main reason we had to do the fundo on Eli. Most illnesses turned into Pneumonia and the vomit spilling over gave him problems with it as well.

I am just wondering about this as Curran has had it before, but with all his previous illnesses and those of Iain I really can not recall how many times anymore. I will ask the ped about it. Curran was my puke machine until about a year ago and now we do have the pukes from time to time, but not right accross the table and floor like before. He is swallowing now for sure as I can see him gag and retch, but again it is nowhere near as much as before, even including his meds being introduced.

I am so tired now that I can't think straight about this, so any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Alexys has had pneumonia 4 times. 3 of those 4 have been from aspiration of formula into her lungs.

We've been lucky, as Cady doesn't aspirate formula. My neice, though, who did not have reflux - or was not diagnosed with it - had pneumonia 7 times her first year, then probably once a year or so, since turning one. She's 6 now. I think she had reflux, but she was treated at free clinics and charity hospitals, so you never know.

No pneumonia here; however, many, many bouts of bronchitis/URIs. Her ped says this is all related to the GERD. :-(

Evan aspirates and has lung damage, but has never had pneumonia.

Tavin has had pneumonia many times. Some diagnosed by x-ray some we know he had but worked through with clyndomyocin. He has RAD and BPD and this last aspiration almost took his life. They say that a classic sign that the pneumonia was from aspiration is that the pneumonia shows up in the right lung. We also had a bronchoscopy that showed the milk in his lungs.

Alexys has had pneumonia 4 times.

Sam as well, but his is from aspiration of formula/food. Seems to me that a lot of these kiddo's have the same issue with their swallows???? Have you guys had a swallow study done to see what thickness they are aspirating??

We have had two done and both time it showed that Sam aspirates anything thinner than honey thickness - thus the thickened bottles.
