View Full Version : Prevacid versus losec
Maiya is not well. She was on zantac with domperidone and did horribly, and was an insomniac on zantac alone. She has been on losec for 2 months, and we are still up every 45 minutes all night long.
I will never see a GI in montreal, but am seeing another pediatrician at the children's hospital in 2 days.
Have any of you tried losec and switched to prevacid, and were there any improvements, or are all PPIs the same? She is better on the losec, no more hollering all night long, but the poor kid is uncomfortable and wimpers all night ling.
Thanks for your thoughts, as i need to figure out what i am asking the ped to do???
Johanne
note: saw her ped today- still no BM after 10 days. He had ordered an abdominal ultrasound and upper GI- can only get them done in April here in Montreal. My ped is angry but there is not much we can do. He might order an abdominal -ray, to see what we can see.
Those of you in the US are blessed!
sixdogssixcats 12-20-2005, 09:02 PM Catherine was on Prilosec from about the age of 1 month until 7 months. It was a compounded suspension, and she did fine on it. Then, we moved and it became really, really inconvenient to get her medication because there was no compounding pharmacy close by. We switched her to Prevacid solutabs purely for convenience reasons, and she's done just as well with them. Maybe even better because she's getting exactly the same dose every day, and I don't have to worry about the solutabs losing their effectiveness over time.
sarahh 12-21-2005, 12:50 AM We started out on zantac, with no major change. We went to Prilosec (losec, omeprazole- all the same thing) and it changed our lives! Matthew has been really good on it. Recently we have had a lot of constant crying and hwimpering all night long and the dose has been doubled and we're back to more settled nights.
I do know that for some, Prilosec doesn't work but prevacid does and vice versa.. so maybe a trial on something else would work. ALso, any chance of increasing her prilosec dose?? How much does she take now? Matthew was upped to 20mg/ day and he weighs 19lb7oz.
Sam's Mom 12-21-2005, 02:25 AM We recently switched from prilosec to prevacid solutabs--I think there is a slight improvement, but the best thing to come out of the switch is no more picking up the prilosec every 2 weeks!
so what have you tried for the constipation??? That is such a long time, she must be very uncomfortable. I will be thinking of you.
We started out on Prilosec capsules which worked for a while, but we found them impossible to administer and Maya vomitted them out. We are now on the Preavcid solutabs after the recommendations made by the members on this board and Maya is doing much better on this.

i knew maiya is on too little losec- only 6mg once a day and she weighs over15 lbs. her doc says it is plenty!!!!!
i will ask the new doc about prevacid
maiya is miserable- 2 glycerin supositories and no poos-1o says now. she has been straining and straining. back to the doc we go!
what kind of doses should we be thinking of for prevacid solutab- i hope to god i can get this med in canada!
sixdogssixcats 12-21-2005, 08:52 AM Jojo,
Unfortunately, you cannot get Prevacid solutabs in Canada yet. The usual infant dosage here in the US is 15mg, and that seems to cover a broad range of weight.
When we had losec Maya was on 15mg and she is 14lb so 6mg seems quite low. In the UK, the drug Prevacid Solutab is called Zoton fastab, so you should check to see if this drug is available in Canada. I had a quick look on the internet and that seems to suggest Zoton fastab is available in Canada. Maya is on 15mg on Zoton fastab and it has been great. You can look at the thread that we had on Maya vomiting up the prilosec, everyone recommended the solutabs. If that is not possible, maybe you can get an increased prilosec dose.

ElisMom 12-21-2005, 12:01 PM We were on prilosec (losec) and had to be switched to prevacid because of insurance. It did not go well. Prevacid gave my son tummy aches, gas, and more discomfort.
Thank you ! I will increase the losec as she no longer has side effects, and will think of zoton fast tabs as a plan B
Will let you know what the doc says
sarahh 12-21-2005, 03:58 PM Well, just some info re:dosage.. Matthew was on 10mg capsule 1/day for a long time... probably from the age of 7 months. 6mg seems on the low side, in fact when my doctor increased the dose to double, he told me not to worry, thatt h drug was very safe and Matthew could be on 4 times this amount if required (as other babies his age were on that much)!!! EEK!!
